5 Industry Again Has Big Heart, Survey Indicates All Branches Help Aid Unfortunate , Needy As it has been in the past, the record again shows that the motion picture industry has been aiding the unfortunate, needy, charities, etc. A survey of the territory this week proved that a new high in the matter of collections, charity matinees, etc., was being set. Reports from the larger cities to this publication revealed the usual broken toy matinees, tin can matinees, free shows, co-operation with police, firemen, organized charities. In the smaller towns, too, the work was going forward with unusual spted. For further details, see NEWS OF THE TERRITORY. Film Row Celebrates Yuletide Christmas spirit was present as usual in the local exchange area this week. Metro Pep Club members completed plans for their annual Christmas party to be held at the exchange December 2 3. Meanwhile, other exchanges made plans to greet Santa Claus, with the exchange of gifts, parties, other featured attractions. On the list are RKO-Radio; Vitagraph, Columbia, 20th Century-Fox, Monogram, Paramount, UA, Republic, Grand National, Trio, Preferred, D. C. Poster. Many out-of-town exhibitors are expected to be in town for the events; of course, they are all invited. Schines Progress Further Recent Schine acquisitions in the DelMar-Va territory include houses in Milford, Laurel, according to reports along Film Row last week. Several local film folk were present at the testimonial tendered the Gloversville, New York, independent circuit operators in Albany, New York, December 19. New Faces to be Seen on Maryland Censor Board Dr. Sandy Resigns As Chairman of Body Maryland will have a new setup for the censor board, it developed last week following the resignation of Dr. Ben Paul Sandy as chairman of the body. His resignation became effective December 13. He claimed pressure of dental work caused the step. The state elected a new governor at the last election. Hagerstown reports had Mrs. Ruth Wertz, wife of the late mayor of the city, appointed to the board to succeed Dr. Sandy. Warner Managers Scheduled To Hold Annual Winter Meet The annual mid-winter meeting of the managers, executives of the Warner Brothers theatres of this area is being held in Washington December 22. Home office folk, division heads, local managers are expected to attend the session, which will discuss policies, forthcoming product, the winter season, etc. Richmond Local Elects Richmond, Virginia, IATSE, Local 87 held its annual election last week, with president Tom Jones, vice-president C. C. Colligan, secretary John P. Leary, treasurer Claude N. Wilson, business agent Harry Jarvis, sergeant-at-arms Frank Matthews on the official roster. Rowland Screens “Duke” Richard Rowland, Edward Small Productions, came to town last week, screened "The Duke of West Point, UA release, for invited guests. He is on a tour of the East screening the show for small groups of exhibitors in various areas. Warner Men Shifted As Beverly Lights Up Personnel Juggled Pending House’s Botv Warner Brothers’ Beverly, located on 15 th Street, Northeast, between Tennessee Avenue and E Street, Washington, will open its doors Friday evening, December 2 3, according to an announcement last week by John J. Payette, general zone manager. Beverly will seat 1000 persons on one floor. It was designed by John Eberson. Through Harry E. Lohmeyer, district manager, Warner theatres in Washington, Payette also announced that Arthur Kilburg will be manager of the Beverly. Kilburg goes to the new theatre from the Apollo, where he occupeid a similar post. Following his policy of promotions from the ranks, Payette also listed the following managerial changes: Sidney Hoffman, from manager, Home, to manager, Apollo. Clyde Abell, from assistant manager, Earle, to manager Home. Ernest Wells, from treasurer, Earle, to assistant manager, Earle. Arthur Molle, from chief of service, Earle, to treasurer, Earle. Alfred Gibbons, from student manager, Colony, to assistant manager, Beverly. James Bott, from student manager, Seco, to student manager. Colony. William Forney, from chief of service, Sheridan, to student manager, Seco. William McDermott, from captain of ushers, Uptown, to chief of service, Beverly. Grand Jury Inspects Hagerstown The Grand Jury paid a visit to Hagerstown, Maryland, theatres last fortnight, gave the theatres a clean bill of health. Points stressed were safety, sanitation, hazards. The theatres were perfect on all counts. Warners' Set National Anthem Territory Warner theatres, in common with the rest of the houses in the national Warner circuit, are playing "The Star Spangled Banner” at least once daily, according to an order issued last week by general manager Joseph Bernhard.
