CLARK put his kid club Saturday morning program on the air over WGH at the James. BEN McKINSEY, "Bennie Mac” former youngsters, Warwick, is back in harness as doorman at that house. HARL WOLEVER is cooperat ng with the Lions Club members, who are selling tickets to “The Great Man Votes,” Paramount, for their shoes-for-the-needy fund. Warwick, James are also participating. Paramount is trying a unit show March 1. Manager WOLEVER, Paramount, worked in a newspaper tieup for "Zaza” with a silk stocking advertisement. — W. T. Richmond Things were very quiet in Richmond, as practically overcome journeyed up to Washington for the MPTO convention. Advance contingent wa. royally received by the exchange boys, who insisted on making the Variety Club the social center for the evening. So everyone adjourned to the Willard, second floor, push the button, and were received with open arms by JAKE FLAX, RUDOLPH BERGER, CARTER BARRON and others. Jake even went into his cellar for liquid refreshments and refused to let anyone else mix the cocktails. All who made their first appearance at the club rooms were awe stricken by the beauty of the surroundings, including, of course, the built-in bar. Among those who enjoyed several hours there Sunday night were: EDDIE McEVOY, New York RKO official; SAM BENDHEIM, JR., and party; JOHN CURTIS CALDWELL, the new pappa from Appomattox who said that he had named the addition "Gene Autry” because he always brought home the bacon at his Lee, Appomattox. NICK HAEFELE came all the way from Baltimore for the occasion. FLAX family was well represented. ALLEN SPARROW and his wife with MR. and MRS. FRED SITTERDING, Richmond, were there; also FRANK O’BRIEN, SAM WHEELER, HAROLD WOOD and wife, VIRGINIA SNEAD, DOROTHY SHEWBRIDGE, WADE PEARSON and his best girl, MARJORIE LEE DERMODY, MR. and MRS. BAYLISS EPPS, ROY RICHARDSON, and numerous others. Banquet and dance was held at the Shoreham, with music for dancing by the hotel orchestra and a floor show arranged by CARTER BARRON with headline acts from Loew’s Capitol and the Earle. DOROTHY SHEWBRIDGE, efficient secretary to HAROLD WOOD, secretary, MPTO of Virginia, was taken sick in Washington. LUCY COBB, cashier, East End, is spending two weeks in Florida. Her sister, MARGARET, is substituting. MURIEL STEVENSON, secretary to FRANK O’BRIEN, v, sited the Maryland Kennel Show. MR. and MRS. ALLEN BROWN sent out a very novel announcement of the birth of their baby worded like a movie trailer. An 800-acre tract eight miles below Richmond is going to be developed into a cooperative community with a stadium and movie theatre to seat 1,200. LEAH ELSNER, daughter of MRS. HARRIET ELSNER, is now relief cashier at the Bellevue. THOMAS PITTS has taken up the Dale Carnegie course. MR. and MRS. CHARLES A. SOMMA are vacationing in Florida. MACK McLAUGHLIN, Altec engineer from Baltimore, relieved MERVIN ULLMAN when he attended the Washington convention. Weekly bowl.ng matches were postponed on account of the convention. GRAHAM BARBEE was certainly missed at the convention. Ditto HUNTER PERRY and CHARLIE SOMMA. IVAN ROSENBAUM, booker, Neighborhood Theatres, was unable to attend the convention on account of sickness. D. H. COVINGTON, manager, Ashland, Ashland, had a tieup with the Home Demonstration Club on "That Certain Age.” HARRY BROWN was in town. JACK CAMPBELL, son of BOB CAMPBELL, well known to Washington film row, has just returned with his orchestra after playing for a month in Paris France. We hear that the State, Radford, will change hands March 1. NORMAN E. MANWARING, former manager, National, and his wife have opened a rooming house. WILSON HAYES, projectionist, State, has gone to the Veterans Hospital in Hampton for treatments. — S. T. Roanoke ELMORE D. HEINS, vice-president-general manager National Theatre Corporation, appeared slated for elevation to the presidency at the annual meeting of the stockholders February 14. Corporation was headed by CHARLES M. BROUN until his death last year. At the w.nter convention of Virginia Motion Picture Theatre Owners Association in Washington, HEINS extended an invitation to the organization to meet in Roanoke next summer. Upon returning to Roanoke, he expressed the belief that his invitation would be accepted. Recent visitors to Roanoke include: JAKE FLAX, Republic; SAM TABOR, Universal; GEORGE NATHAN, National Screen; JOE WALSH, Columbia; SAM CUMMINGS. — H. H. WEST VIRGINIA Martinsburg New independent theatre is under construction here. Consists of remodeling former store, which at one time was a theatre. FRANK PONTON is in charge of construction for owner. Martinsburg already has two Warner houses. — L. S. McW. VARIETY CLUB Tent No. 19, Baltimore Due to the splendid work done by Chief Barker J. LOUIS ROME for the first annual dinner dance, a special night was set aside for celebrating the occasion February 1. Greatest crowd ever gathered in the club rooms of the Variety Club of Baltimore, Tent No. 19 assembled to do honor. One of the events of the evening was the unveiling of the fine oil painting by JOSEPH ST. LAWRENCE BAXTER, staff artist, Lexway, which now hangs in an honored position in the club rooms.
