Hints on Newspaper Advertising
No. 13 — "Gunga Din ” (RKO)
Before we begin the discussion, students, let us say that the pressbook on "Gunga Din” is a honey. The above layouts indicate how use was made of pressbook parts according to local situations, but the art work, etc., to be found in the pressbook is unsurpassed.
The Radio City Music Hall offering, for example, stick to that class, "use of white space” style so well known. For the RCMH, this is okay, and it also might be used in spots where the ads generally run black, for contrast, but we prefer something with the old sock like that from Philadelphia.
We like, too, the holdover ad from Washington, which can be used anywhere, and we like the idea of selling the name of the show, minimizing the names, etc., because obviously the people already know what the whole thing is about.
The Baltimore type ad "Sutipapers we protest” illustrates how a smart ad man got his point in, particularly since we know that the Baltimore Sutipapers have almost deadly typographic restrictions.
Apparently the female angle is unimportant to all of the above, because only one used it.
was made by local health representation that they attend the theatre to see the short.
Albany, New York
As part of the ballyhoo for "Serum to Windham,” New York State’s own motion picture on pneumonia and its control, the Strand, Albany, made arrangements to have the Association of State Civil Service Employees of the State of New York its membership in behalf of the picture.
"Lincoln in the White House”
Hornell, New York
Allen Newhall, Majestic, Hornell, put particular stress on his short, advertising it widely, placing one-sheet cards with stills in local high schools, libraries, City Hall bulletin boards, etc. He also placed special still boards, one-sheet and heralds in Alfred University library and in Eng
lish class rooms. Special display with stills was placed in theatre lobby. Manager contacted local teachers, Parent-Teachers organizations, Boy Scout Troop heads, Fortnightly Clubs, fraternal organizations, and American Legion Posts, advising them of playdate. Local Secretary of YMCA urged all members to attend showing. Manager Newhall conducted a best essay contest or Lincoln in the White House in cooperation with history teachers of schools and offered prizes.
"Bow Strings”
Hagerstown, Maryland
George N. Payette, Jr., city manager, Warners’ Hagerstown, Maryland, theatres, has a fine campaign on "Bow Strings,” starring Jean Tenney, of Clear Springs (near Hagerstown), who is women’s national archery champion. Miss Tenney will make a personal appearance at the Maryland, where the RKO-Pathe Sportscope will be shown starting February 27.
Highlights in
Magazine Tie-Ups
"Stagecoach”
From Lynn Farnoll, at United Artists, comes a handsome brochure on "Stagecoach,” called "3 0 minutes of entertaining reading.”
It tells the background of the Walter Wanger production, how it was made, what the angles are, points about the production, cast, story, etc.
As such it is an extremely interesting bit of writing and probably would make a nice souvenir for showings of the picture, if the cost isn’t too high. It would also add a class touch to the de luxe presentations.
"Love Affair”
A selected list of national, fan magazines will be the media used to pre-sell this RKO production with a comprehensive advertising campaign.
