SAM GALANTY'S Columbians— CHARLES A. (Chick) WINGFIELD, BEN CAPLON, OWEN D. WEEMS, JOSEPH B. WALSH— came out in sixth place in the Personal Achievement Drive. Bookers JOE KUSHNER, JACK SHARE (now a salesman in the Cleveland office) took first place in the liquidation portion of the contest, the only easterners in the first 12 spots.
Republic’s JAMES R. GRAINGER was in town recently (also at Bowie) to lay some groundwork for "Man of Conquest.” He called on drama editors, particularly selling the idea to the Post’s NELSON B. BELL, who gave the RICHARD DIX starrer a swell story. To all of this, as well as the picture itself, SAM and JAKE FLAX point with pardonable pride, for they know that Nels, an old-time showman as well as critic, knows what it is all about and says what he honestly believes.

Following having his leg amputated at Sinai Hospital, JACOB COHN, father of MOE COHN, Lexway; AL COHN, Pennington; MAX COHN, Oasis Night Club; is recuperating. All the many friends of the brothers are happy.
MORRIS A. MECHANIC, New, Centre owner, enjoyed his fortnight stay at the Essex House, Miami Beach — co-owned by his brother WILLIAM and MAURICE FLEISCHMAN — returned full of vim and vigor. He came right in middle of campaign to exploit "Graham Bell,” and immediately plunged into the affair of the Easter egg treasure hunt at Druid Hill Park, an annual affair with the New and the NewsPost and Sunday American. It was estimated
30.000 children enjoyed the affair and 1,000 prizes were given out.
IRVING MARTIN has resigned as house manager, Loew’s Century and has been succeeded by ROBERT ETCHBERGER, has been at Loew’s Parkway in that city and at other Loew theatres in the country.

To promote interest in "Three Smart Girls Grow Up,” at Keith’s, manager J. LAWRENCE SCHANBERGER arranged a tie-up with the Baltimore News-Post and Sunday American by which all girls who could play a musical instrument, sing or dance could compete before a committee of judges for prizes offered.
MORRIS A MECHANIC, president, New, Centre, attended the celebration of the 3 8th wedding anniversary of MR. and MRS. A. MARCUS, formerly of Baltimore, and now in Miami Beach, when he was there. At this event the announcement of the coming wedding of their daughter MISS HILDA H. MARCUS to WILLIAM C. MECHANIC, brother of Morris, was made.
MISS HELEN LEONARD, office manager, Hippodrome, attended opening baseball game in Washington April 15.
MILTON CAPLON, Linden manager, arranges to use the title of a different picture each day in the Evening Sun calendar, when he books a double feature for any two days. He uses the title of one picture one day and the title of the other the next.
I. M. RAPPAPORT, Hippodrome proprietor, is having the big electric marquee given a thorough overhauling and repaint job prior to hanging another beautiful valence advertising his stage shows made by the National Flag and Banner Company.
JOE FIELDS, Rivoli, Embassy, is having a new electric sign front made under his Embassy.
MOE COHN has just had a fine new opaque letter sign box installed directly under his marquee.

Something unusual is the Hi-Yo Silver Club organized here by local citizen. About 75 adults will attend each Monday night at Academy, showing "Lone Ranger” serial.
ALVIN PRATT, Washington, head, Warner sound, was here recently after completing supervision installation new sound at Strand, Martinsburg, West Virginia, which opened April 14.
EDWARD L. CONROY, formerly associated with CHARLES W. BOYER, old-time theatre operator here, returned recently in interests of Barnett circus.

Midland
Midland Opera House patrons are loud in praise of the exceptionally good sound system in this little mining town theatre. Manager JOSEPH W. JONES, has a new Western Electric Mirrophonic Sound system, which was the first New Western Electric 193 9 model to come to Maryland. House also installed rebuilt Simplex projectors. JAMES T. TAYLOR is assistant. Midland is in Allegany county a few miles from Cumberland.
Port Deposit
JOHN M. SMITH, North East, who recently bought the Riverside, has made many new improvements and has renamed it the Port. This makes Smith owner of two theatres, the other being the North East.
VIRGINIA
Alexandria
H. A. WASSERMAN, Capital, plans to enlarge his house about June 1. Theatre will be closed several weeks during alterations.
