Hints on Newspaper Advertising
No. 3 0 — "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle ” (RKO-Radio)
Representing a good cross-section of early firstruns, this layout illustrates what might be done with the very good pressbook, as witness the Syracuse, Norfolk. Trenton ads.
The Radio City Music Hall ads follow the policy of that house, and are particularly suited to an attraction of this type.
The story behind the Harrisburg entrant is interesting. The house found itself forced to open the show without a pressbook or anything at all. The manager remembered an ad in a fan magazine, used it, with some slight changes which
indicates what can be done when a manager is alert. Needless to say, the kind of ad it is insured its getting attention on the page in the local dailies.
It might also be noted that the Walt Disney short — "The Ugly Duckling” — received its billing, too.
"The Castles ” is a hit show, which, however, should not be the signal for the exploiteers to take it easy. "The Castles ” is the kind of picture that aims at top records, so do your best, boys.
