Here are some of the Christmas expressions from stars: WILLIAM FAKNUM— "Grateful memories crowd upon me of the millions of 'unknown' friends who have contributed to my success on the screen. They are happy memories indeed and wreathing them with holly and with mistletoe, they go out to you on Christmas wings with my heart's earnest wish that your Christmas may be what all of mine have been — a day filled with peace, content and happiness." PEARL WHITE — "We have much to be thankful for this season. First of all there is peace on earth, at least, on all the earth save a few spots. The world is passing through a reconstruction period, and this is accompanied and will be followed by good-will toward men. What impresses me most strongly in these times of marvelous achievement is the wonderful growth of motion pictures. I have received many letters wishing me continued success and I take this opportunity of acknowledging them and expressing my thanks. To my friends throughout the world my one wise today is, A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." TOM MIX — "My message comes from out West. With me, as I am writing this, are Indians, cowboys, horses and we are on the open plain. The Indians are looking forward to Christmas and so are the cowboys. Those who have kids are planning to take mighty good care of them. Those who haven't are going to do something for the penniless kiddies who need a friend. Let's all try to do the same thing this year. Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!" SHIRLEY MASON — "My lifelong dream of Christmas is to be severely jarred this season. As far back as I can remember I've been picturing reindeers prancing over my roof, bringing the ever-welcome Santa and his sleigh-load of toys and other things. And now this Christmas comes with elephants. I shall spend my Christmas learning to love these wonderful creatures, that look so appealingly through their little eyes, at least the trainer tells me it is an appealing look).^ But as I am to love an elephant man in my first Fox picture very naturaly I must love his elephants. So if I do miss my reindeers I'm going to be just as comfortable and Christmas-like as any girl can be among such big strangers — who seem, however, to be getting more friendly every day." GLADYS BROCKWELL— "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all is my message." GEORGE WALSH— "Let's all be happy and care-free on Dec. 25. Christmas is a time when everyone should forget his or her troubles." WILLIAM RUSSELL— "Here is a 'Christmas Cocktail': A little of the spirit of human kindness, a little joy, plenty of generosity, shake well; drink freely on Christmas Day." MADLAINE TRAVERSE— "Eugene Field has written a story of a poverty-stricken child, who, neglected and friendless on Christmas Eve, wandered out into a storm and found happiness in the arms of the Lord. Let us think of the friendless children in this Christmas season; let us help them, and thus find our own happiness." BUCK JONES— "I hope every kid in the world will be able to lasso old Santa Claus and get what he wants. Christmas is the time for the kids, and we ought to give them all we can." MARGUERITE CLAYTON— "Just a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all is my one wish." JOHN O'BRIEN — "We have cause for happiness this year because there is work and prosperity for all." RICHARD STANTON, Director— "We in motion pictures should be especially happy this year. The industry is improving steadily. It has a wonderful future. The pictures now being shown are better than ever before." HAMPTON DEL RUTH, supervising director of Fox Sunshine Comedies — "All the Sunshine Girls have delegated me to wish their friends a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." HARRY MILLARDE, Director— "The year 1919 has been the greatest in the history of motion pictures. It has been a year in which the public wanted particularly to be amused. Producers exerted every energy to present the best of pictures, and the public responded with enthusiasm." DEL HENDERSON, Director— "We may be proud of what motion pictures have accomplished during the past year; but it is my prediction that a year hence we will be even prouder of what they accomplished in the year 1920." J. GORDON EDWARDS, Director of William Farnum — "Mr. Farnum has expresed my sentiments." H. M. MITCHELL, Director— "All the world's a screen and all the men and women are its players. They can register joy, sorrow, anger, fear according to their own wishes. During this Christmas period let's have the actors all smiling." CLIFF SMITH. Director^'My hat off to Santa Claus, the star who holds the center of the stage for a two weeks' run." CHARLES SWICKARD, Director— "It is my hope that everyone taking part in the superfeature, 'Christmas Doings of 1919,' will feel that he or she is a star of the first magnitude, acting under the direction of Santa Claus." CHARLES J. BRABIN, Director— "A Merry Christmas! It has been said millions of times — but the oftener 'tis said the sweeter it sounds." 104 HIGH SPOTS IN NEWS {Continued from preceding page) Selznick enterprises announce big expansion.
