He is resting in the mountains hear San Diego. * * * Cecil B. De Mille has purchased a new yacht which he has named the "Seaward." * * * June Mathis, scenarioist of "The Four Horsemen," and more recently with the Lasky studio is en route to New York accompanied by her mother who is in ill health. Miss Mathis is expected to return to the Coast shortly. * * * Lloyd Bacon, son of the famous Frank Bacon, will hereafter direct comedies for Jack White. He has been writing stories for the comedy company. * * * ■ William A. Seiter, formerly director for Doris May will direct "The Beautiful and Damned," which Warner Brothers arc to produce. * * * Gertrude Astor will play opposite Earle Williams in his next picture. * * * Famous Players-Lasky will make the Hergeshimer story "Java Head." George Melford will direct. * * * Harry Garson is to film the James Whitcomb Riley classic, "An Old Sweetheart of Mine." * * * Richard Walton Tully, having completed "Omar the Tent Maker," expects to leave for Europe within ten days to arrange bookings for "The Masquerader." * * * Benjamin Hampton, in a public statement, says he will not resume production, his interests having been taken over by Federal Photoplays. * * * Elaine Hammerstein was slightly in jured while working in "One Week of Love," when she dove into the San Joaquin River. Ruth Roland is reported to have purchased sixty acres of land fronting on Wilshire boulevard, but this is only for investment it is said. * * * Lee Moran, Century comedian, is on his way home from a trans-continental trip. *. * * Ernest Traxler has resigned as production manager of the Mission Film Corj. oration. * * * Mildred Davis, it is reported, will not continue as leading woman with Hal Lloyd when her contract expires shortly. She is said to be scheduled for feature's. * * * Adalbert G. Volck. has been named assistant to Myron Selznick at the Selznick offices at the United studios. Joseph SchleifF, who held the same position has returned to New York. Lester Cuneo has completed another ■state rights picture under the direction of Henry McCarthy. * * * Anna Q. Nilsson, working with Reginald Barker in his first Louis Mayer production, was seriously burned while making scenes this week. Percy Hilburn, the Barker cameraman, was also burned. * * * Hoot Gibson's next picture will be "Ridin' Wild," by Roy Myers. Nat Ross will direct and Edna Murphy will be the feminine lead. * * * "Around the World in Eighteen Days" will be the next Universal serial. J. P. McGowan will direct. * * * Work has been started on the new Von Stroheim production, "Merry Go Round" at Universal City. The cast includes Norman Kerry, Mary Philbin, Dale Fuller, Spottiswoode Aitken, Maude George, Allan Sears and George Hackathorne. * * * Emile Chautard will direct a UniversalJewel production of "Forsaking All Others" by Mary Lerner. "The Hot Head," by Mrs. George Randolph Chester will be Frank Mayer's next picture. * * * Colleen Moore has been engaged by Irving Thalberg, general manager for Universal, to head the cast of "Forsaking All Others." * * * Sam E. Rork has signed a contract with James Young, whereby Young will direct four special productions during the coming year. J. Warren Kerrigan is to resume his place on the screen. He will begin his first picture shortly under the direction of Jean Hersholt. * * * W. S. Smith, general manager of the Vitagraph studio has returned from the East where he has been for three weeks. Frankie Morrow McLaughlin, who has been saying "Number, please," at the United Studios for several years was married this week to William Earle Neugle. Warner Brothers Start Work on Two New Films With the completion of the second Wesley Barry picture, "Little Heroes of the Street," under the direction of William Beaudine, Harry Rapf and S. L. and Jack Warner have begun immediate preparations to begin work on "Brass," the Charles G. Norris' novel of marriage and divorce, and "The Beautiful and Damned," the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The prominent members of the cast for "The Beautiful and Damned" include Marie Prevost, Kenneth Harlan, Tully Marshall, Louise Fazenda, Allen Percy, Clarence Burton and Jimmy Morrison. "Brass" is being directed by Sidney Franklin. Second National Pictures Issues Unique Press Book Second National Pictures Corporation, which recently announced eight new pictures for publication in the coming season in addition to the four already issued, has prepared the fourth number of its "Exhibitors' Guide" as a press book for "Broken Shadows," picturization of the novel, "Nance," by Charles Garvice. A feature of the new press book is the replacing of the conventional "Catchlines" and "Teaser Lines" with columns of "Shadows" and "Whys." The "Why" and shadow pictures have been used extensively by Second National in trade^ paper advertising. Demand for photoplays of a highly dramatic nature has prompted Eastern Film Corporation to publish "The House of Darkened Windows" at the present time. The production is said to be a strong feature of this type. It was directed by A. B. Heath. The cast includes a number of prominent players, among them Richard Martin, Lark Bronlee, Joseph Chailee, William Crowley and M. A. Kelly. Adds to "Notoriety" Cast Kathlyn Williams has been added to the cast being assembled for William de Mille's Paramount production, "Notoriety," an original by Clara Berangen. Bebe Daniels and Lewis Stone have the leading roles.
