More Letters from Retirees Dear Editor, Our copy of Famous News just received (Aug. 18), nevertheless the mail got it through somehow. While I have been retired for the past seven years after 40 years with the Company, I have kept in touch with things going on within Famous and FAMOUS NEWS is much appreciated. When I read of all the new theatres and equipment installations, I wish I was in the middle of it again. I guess it will never get out of my blood. I recently visited the new Capitol Six in Victoria — it is a beautiful theatre! If any of the employees should visit our beautiful island, please drop in and say hello. Sincerely, Ray Townsend Retired, Engineer/ District Megr., General Sound Chemamus, B.C. Dear Editor: The pleasure derived from receiving Famous News and becoming reacquainted with many of my former friends and associates is really fascinating. Having retired in 1975 after some 33 years at Head Office, I find it rather nice to see and read about the activities of those who are still there. Best Regards, Bert McLean Retired, Manager Payroll Downsview, Ont. 2 September/October, 1981 To The Editor: First let me apologize for not addressing this to you personally, but I’ve lost the memo announcing your appointment. Congrats and good luck. I think that Famous News is something this Company has needed for years. Anyway, down to business. I am sending some photos I took around the Skyway during the last few weeks of construction and thought they would make a nice addition to any story you may run about the opening of the theatre. As for other news, nothing much has happened at the Skyway, but in 76 days we have managed to get held-up. (I’m sure you know all about this one); had about two dozen top Canadian Open players drop in one rainy day. Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf and others, made for an unexpected celebrity night. Assistant Manager Dominic Suriano is taking a week’s vacation for his annual orgy at the Festival of Festivals; it’s the only time he pays to see a movie. As for myself, I’m taking a week’s vacation at the end of this month, to coincide with my first year wedding anniversary. My wife Virginia worked as a cashier at the North York Sheridan until she retired last January to work on a family instead. Our first little usher or confectionist is expected next April. Keep up the good work. I’ll try to send more in the future. Sincerely, L. Scott Crowe Trainee Assistant Skyway Six Cinemas, Toronto. ED. NOTE: Thanks for your letter, Scott, we managed to use a couple of your photos on Page 5. Investigators are ‘same as you’ Dear Editor, In response to a request from Mr. J.P. Whyte, I am sending a cartoon for FAMOUS NEWS which I trust will meet with everyone’s approval and offend none. (see page 17) This and any subsequent cartoons submitted to the NEWS are offered ‘tongue-in-cheek’ and are not intended to ridicule or offend any member of our Company, but rather to try and create a relationship between the investigators and their fellow workers throughout the nation. It is a lonely occupation being a member of a Company which employs hundreds — yet being able to make personal contact with a mere handful. To the managers and staff of all theatres, coast to coast, I would like to say we know all of you, and when we come face to face with you regularly, as we do, we feel we would very much like to introduce ourselves and let you see that we really are reasonable people. However as we are unable to reveal ourselves, please take our word for it, we are members of this great Company — the same as you, we make mistakes — the same as you, and our object is to give our patrons the best possible value for their money — the same as you! I know the policy of ‘‘FAMOUS NEWS’? is not to publish any letter that is anonymous; however, in this case I trust you will make an exception. Sincerely, **The Spook’’ Editor’s letter The resignation of Mickey Trigiani on July 24, and my own _ subsequent vacation before assuming the position of editor, precluded any possibility of printing the issue of Famous News planned for July/August. The past few weeks have been an uphill struggle in getting this 4th edition to press, and we know you will forgive any omissions which may have resulted. We have lots of interesting material to work on for upcoming issues, but are relying upon you to keep us updated with the news — about your theatre, staff, activities, etc. So please — let’s hear from you. Sincerely, Elizabeth Pollock Editor nc RG EE
