Film Studies is an academic discipline concerned with the history, criticism, theory and practice of the cinema both as an art form and as a documentary record of our time. The cinema is a source of pleasure and knowledge, and its study should form a part of one’s cultural education. The program will enable a student to develop a critical faculty appropriate to intelligent
understanding of the cinema by approaching its study as a scholarly activity which rewards systematic research, analysis and exposition.

The Art of Film: The film as a medium for artistic expression, as seen in the work of major European and American directors. Two terms.
American Cinema I: A survey of some of the predominant features of the American cinema from its beginnings to 1940. Emphasis will be placed both on the artistic value of the films and on their social significance and impact. One term. American Cinema II: A survey of some of the predominant features of the American cinema from 1940 to the present day. Emphasis will be placed both on the artistic value of the films and on their social significance and impact. One term. Literature and Film: An examination of the particular characteristics of both literature and film and the inter-relationship between them, through a detailed study of selected novels, short stories, and plays and the films that have been based on them. One term.
French Cinema: A survey of French film from 1896 to the present with particular emphasis upon such major figures as Renoir, Clair, Bresson, Truffaut and Resnais. One term.
Film Comedy: A study of the tradition of film comedy within a framework of comic theory in general and especially in its application to drama. One term. Prerequisites: Contact Instructor, or the Chairman of the Committee of Instruction for Dramatic Arts.

Three-year Broadcasting Program offers training in all aspects of Film, TV and Radio production. Students must take general introduction to Broadcasting in First Year, with specialization during Second Year. Film production is “hands on” and aims to provide students with technical and creative skills needed for employment in various areas of film production.

The O.C.A. in its education of professional artists and designers offers students the opportunity of hands-on experience in film, animation, video and audio, within the framework of a four-year diploma programme. These courses are available to full and part-time students within the Department of Technological Studies. Film courses are available in introductory and advanced film production, including camera techniques, studio lighting, sound, editing and post-production.
Animation courses include technical applications of animation equipment involving pre-production, production and post-production techniques, rotoscoping and optical printing.
Video courses include introductory video technology using b&w and colour cameras to create electronic images. Students conduct advanced investigations into video synthesis and digitally controlled analog animation.
