The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) was founded by an Act of Parliament on May 2, 1939. Its mandate is “to produce and distribute films designed to interpret Canada to Canadians and other nations...”.
The NFB is headed by the Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson who reports to the Minister of Canadian Heritage. The Board of Trustees is composed of the Government Film Commissioner who is also the Chairperson, the Executive Director of Telefilm Canada and six other people who are appointed by Governor in Council.
The NFB operates a national toll-free sales and information telephone system (1-800-267-7710) and maintains partnerships with over 35 libraries, as well as relationships with over 400 other distribution points across Canada to ensure that Canadians have direct access to NFB productions. The NFB catalogue is available on the internet at www.nfb.ca.
