THE CANADIAN FILM AWARDS
Compiled (with permission) from “A Pictorial History of The Canadian Film Awards” by Maria Topolavich (Stoddart 1984. A co-publication with The Academy of Canadian Cinema)
In May 1947, at a national conference of fortyfour organizations affiliated with the Canadian
Association for Adult Education, it was decided that the time had come for awards to
distinguished Canadian film and radio programs.
These awards were to realize three main objectives: recognizing significant Canadian creative effort, helping Canadians to understand the work of Canadian creative artists, and
raising the standards of film and radio programs.
A fifteen-member National Advisory Board was formed from representatives in a variety of disciplines and institutions across the country, and the Board appointed an executive committee to oversee day-to-day management. Two technical committees (film and radio) were selected to work on competition categories, procedures, criteria for selection, nomination of judges, and many other all-important matters, including a name for the award, and its financing.
On April 27, 1949, the first Canadian Film Awards were presented at the Little Elgin Theatre in Ottawa, hosted by the Hon. Robert Winter, Minister of Reconstruction and Supply. The Canadian Film Awards had a long run twenty-nine years from 1949 to 1978. They were superseded by The Academy of Canadian Cinema Genie Awards, starting in 1980.
