Dorothy and Oscar Burritt founded the first film society in Canada. Established in February 1964, this Award perpetuates the unique spirit and dedication of these true film pioneers. After the untimely death in 1999 of Patricia Thompson, who was also very active in the film society movement for many years, the Trustees decided to include her name in this Award. The Award is competitive, and given by its Trustees to an individual or volunteer / nonprofit organization wishing to undertake / start a project designed to enrich and enhance film appreciation, and which will contribute to a wider enjoyment and awareness of film as an art. Mid-April is the deadline for applications to the annual Award competition. The winner of the 36th (2000) Award of $2,500 was Joanna Hilchie, Waverley, Nova Scotia.
