Aims and Scope
For more than two decades content creators from around the world have come to the Banff Television Festival in June to take part in a conference noted for innovation, excellence, and opportunity. As a showcase of innovation, the Festival features lively sessions and debates about new media and the issues of convergence in addition to discussions on the latest trends in the world of conventional television. As a celebration of excellence, the Festival administers the Banff Rockie Awards competition for the world’s best television programs and webcasts. The Festival has been dubbed “a marketplace of ideas and relationships”. Opportunities to strike production and coproduction deals abound, and new business contacts are made every day beneath the inspiring Canadian Rocky Mountains. Next Festival takes place June 10-15, 2001.

Established in February 1964, this Award perpetuates the unique spirit and dedication of these true film pioneers. After the untimely death in 4999 of Patricia Thompson, who was also very active in the film society movement for many years, the Trustees decided to include her name in this Award. Pat was also publisher & editor of Film Canada Yearbook, and active in many facets of the Canadian film industry.
The Award is competitive, and given by its Trustees to an individual or volunteer / nonprofit organization wishing to undertake / start a project designed to enrich and enhance film appreciation, and which will contribute to a wider enjoyment and awareness of film as an art. Mid-April is the deadline for applications to the annual Award competition.
The winner of the 37th (2001) award of $2,500 was the Friends of the Broadway Theatre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The grant was to enable the Friends of the Broadway Theatre, a non-profit communitybased organization, to preserve, maintain and operate the only independent repertory cinema house in Saskatchewan and one of
