Pioneer of the Year Award — In 1952 the Canadian Picture Pioneers marked the Golden Anniversary of the Silver Screen in Canada, dating it from the establishment of the first successful motion picture theatre — the Electric of John Schulberg on Cordova Street, Vancouver, which he opened in the fall of 1902. At the celebration banquet, held in the Royal York Hotel, Toronto, Schulberg, Jule Allen of Toronto, George Ganetakos of Montréal, A.J. Mason of Springhill, Nova Scotia, Léo-Ernest Ouimet of Montréal and Fred G. Spencer of Saint John, New Brunswick, were honoured as pre-1910 pioneers who had done the most to advance the motion picture as a popular form of entertainment in its early days.
The next year, the Pioneer of the Year Award was inaugurated.
