Entertainment Tax No entertainment tax is imposed by the Government of Newfoundland. Under the City of St. John’s Act, Section 284, an entertainment tax may be levied, and a 20% tax is presently levied on movie theatres. The Theatres Act gives the Board the authority to review and classify any film that is exhibited, rented or sold in Ontario. The Board Members take into account the general character and integrity of each film in its entirety and use the Theatres Act and a set of guidelines to determine the film classification. The Ontario Film Review Board's objective is to classify films and videos and thereby provide the public with sufficient information to make informed viewing choices for themselves and for their children. The Board classifies film into four categories: ¢ General — Suitable for all. e Parental Guidance — Parental Guidance advised. Parents cautioned that content may not be suitable for all children. Film appropriate for 14 and over and also suitable for viewing by children under 14 accompanied by an adult. e 14A — Persons younger than 14 must be accompnied by an adult e 18A — Persons younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. e Restricted — Restricted to persons 18 years of age and over. ® Eliminations — Each film is judged on its own merit. The Board may prohibit or require eliminations in a film based on the criteria set out in the regulations to the Theatres Act.
