A division of National Archives of Canada with authority to aquire, describe and provide specialized reference services to archivally significant Canadian film, TV and sound documents produced both publicly and privately. Initiated as a project of the Public Archives of Canada in 1969, The Audio-Visual Sector was formally established by Cabinet in January 1976 with a mandate to acquire all film, video and sound collections of national significance. At present, the Audio-Visual Sector holds over 300,000 hours of moving image and sound recordings.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) was founded by an act of Parliament on May 2, 1939. Its mandate is “to produce and distribute films designed to interpret Canada to Canadians and other nations. The NFB operates a national toll-free sales and information telephone system and maintains partnerships with over 35 libraries, as well as relationships with over 400 other distribution points across Canada to ensure that Canadians have direct access to NFB productions. The NFB catalogue is available on the website. The NFB also has offices in New York, Paris and London, arranging the commercial distribution of NFB titles through private sector distributors, promoting the direct sales of films and videos, and negotiating sales to broadcasters.
