The program is concerned with the moving image both as a medium of artistic expression and as a carrier of social values. Primary goals of the program are to educate students in the areas of: film and media history; fundamentals of visual literacy in film and television; film and media narrative; aesthetic styles and strategies in film; and the role played by film and media in social and cultural life, including their presentation of gender, race and class.
Secondary but important areas of instruction include more specialized and intensive instruction in; film and media theory; film and media popular culture; national cinemas and media systems; and authorship and genre in film. The program contains no production component at this time.
