The Banff New Media Institute runs, partners and collaborates on a series of professional development and training workshops and seminars over the course of the year. BNMI workshops are dedicated to all aspects of new media creation — art, research, technology, financing, publishing and distribution. The workshops combine theoretical presentations with practical work. They are designed as learning laboratories where participants, under the guidance of new media experts, engage in crossdisciplinary dialogue and project creation. As well as providing high-level training opportunities, professional development at BNMI workshops represents an excellent occasion for networking, providing participants with exposure and rare access to internationally renowned artists and researchers.

A school without walls, NSI is one of Canada’s nationally recognized film and television training schools for writers, directors and producers with various levels of experience. Students from across the country come together to participate in short, intensive training sessions and then return to their home regions to develop their projects with local mentors. NSI core programs deal with producing a short film, developing a feature film, pitching a television series and global marketing of Canadian works. Programs have also recently been delivered to provide training for content creators of aboriginal and visible minority backgrounds. 2006 marks the NSI’s 20th anniversary year.
