Two Gaumont Trade Shows.
The Gaumont Co., Ltd., will again give two trade owe next week. On Tuesday, at the Shaftesbury Pavilion, a selection of the new Masters Series of one-reel features, ‘‘ Tense Moments from Operas,”’ will be the attraction; whilst on Wednesday the third Swedish Biograph production presented by the Gaumont Co., *‘ Seas of Chance,’’ will receive its premiere at the New Gallery at 1l a.m. ‘‘ Seas of Chance ”’ is built upon a motherlove theme, but the sentiment is said to be genuine without being mawkish, and the pathos as real as the intrigue is stimulating. John W. Bruinius directed the picture, and his wife, Pauline Brunius, a very fine actress, plays the mother role.
Uncorking the Cure.
A bold and striking broadsheet is issued from the house of Famous-Lasky in connection with ‘ Fool’s Paradise,’’ the film recently trade shown in London and the provinces. Its front illustration portrays an ingenious idea. Headed ‘‘ The Cure,”’ a medicine bottle is seen in a horizontal position, and dropping from its loosely-corked mouth are men and women who are descending into a sparsely-filled theatre. Scenes from the film, a large illustration of the producer, Cecil B. de Mille, particulars of members of the cast, and a synopsis fill the publication with interest.
To Play Nona.
Miss Ann Forrest, the charming film star who arrived in London on Tuesday, has made the trip from New York under contract with the Fox Film Company to play the part of Nona in the new film, ‘‘ If Winter Comes,’’ which is now being made in this country under the direction of Mr. Harry Millarde. Miss Forrest, who is Danish by birth, has already done a large amount of film work in this country, and has played several English parts. She is an expert horsewoman, and has won several prizes at big horse shows in the United States for jumping.
Producers Co-operating.
In his big task of making three important films in six months, Louis Mercanton is fortunate in having co-operating with him Rene Hervil, whose films, ‘‘ In Old Alsace,’’ ‘* Blanchette,’’ and ““The Crime of Lord Arthur Savile,’? have been so much admired in this country. They are at present in Algiers, engaged on ‘‘Sarati Le Terrible,’’ thence they cross to Spain to film ‘The Gardens of Murcia ’’ (now being played in London under the title of ‘‘ Spanish Lovers ’’).
‘* Know Your Men."’
Screen dramas dealing with modern domestic life have always been popular with the picture-going public, especially if. they depict the little troubles which so often lead to disaster. A story of this nature is contained in the William Fox production, ‘* Know Your Men,” to be released about the second week in July. Pearl White portrays a difficult réle which calls for an unusual amount of emotional acting. One of the strongest scenes in the picture is that in which a large crowd of angry investors storm the house of the ruined financier, where Hey are met and eventually pacified by his daughter.

‘“ A Sporting Double.’’
Granger’s tell us that the new Granger-Davidson film, ‘SA Sporting Double,’ which is No. 5 of the British National Program, contains wonderful shots of the 1922 Derby and the 1922 Football Cup Final between Huddersfield Town and Preston North End. This is the first time that the two biggest sporting events of the year have been included in a big feature film, It is noteworthy that this photoplay is to be shown on July 6, just a few weeks after the Epsom meeting. Apart from the sporting element, the story is said to be one that grips the attention immediately and holds it throughout the film. The cast includes John Stuart, Douglas Munro, Terry Cavanagh, Tom Coventry, Myrtle Vibart, and Lilian Douglas.
(S)WORDPLAY.
7 HILST Emmett J. Flynn was producing ‘‘ Monte Cristo,”’
W Max Linder, the well-known French comedian, called
at the studio to visit John Gilbert, who enacts the title
réle in ‘t Monte Cristo.’’ Linder is a fencer of renown, and he
met an old friend in Captain Uytterhove, a famous Belgian
swordsman. In a few moments they had donned masks and pads, and started a ‘* set to’’ with the foils.
The pair crossed weapons, made a few strokes, and, then, holding their positions, started to discuss in lightning-like French their respective advances, ete. They would make a few more thrusts, and again argue the merits or demerits of their position. An old studio carpenter became interested, and for half-an-hour watched and listened to the pair. Later, he was asked the result of the fight.
‘* What fight? ’’ he queried.
‘““Why, the fencing fight between the professor and Max Linder.”’
“‘T didn’t wait to see it finish,’’ came the laconie reply, ‘* but when I left the professor was 2,000 words ahead.”’
