Benny still has a picture to make for 20th Century and another at Paramount. It will take some juggling to complete these pacts. "Killers of the Amazon" will be recognized as the expeditionary film financed by Monogram for Clyde Elliott. Film has been turned over to UA for release and Frank Buck, Elliott's sponsor, is going to narrate it. Mono still retains an interest in the show and since it was announced as a special and never mentioned as part of the independent company's regular program, the switchover to UA will not effect Monogram's contracts. Sol Lesser and UA have completed negotiations for the release of an all-star "Stage Door Canteen." Lesser will provide his own financing with a portion of the receipts to go to charity .. .Miss Katherine Cornell, premiere stage star, will have her first screen role. Katherine Hepburn, Kay Kyser and Edgar Bergen are signed for parts... Gary Cooper and UA are huddling on a productionstarring deal. . .Adrian returns to the studios for one picture. He will design the gowns to be worn in Charles Rogers' "Powers Girls" ...UA has moved its business office from the Goldwyn to General Service Studio ... David Loew is in New York turning over the print of "Moon and Sixpence." He'll then enter the service... Craig Rice, former burlesque press agent and author of several novels, will script "G-String Murder Case" for Hunt Stromberg. This puts both of Stromberg's properties, the other being "Dishonored Lady," into the writing mill. Stromberg is one UA producer who apparently means business. UNIVERSAL Another Charles K. Feldman package deal will bring Michele Morgan and "Letters to Lucerne" for production shortly. IN PRODUCTION— "Forever Yours" (Deanna Durbin-Edmund O'Brien), "Arabian Nights" (Sabu-Maria Montez), "Flesh and Fantasy" (Charles Boyer-Edward G. Robinson), "Moonlight in Havana" (Allan Jones-Jane Frazee), "Shadow of a Doubt" (Teresa Wright-Joseph Cotten), "Sin Town" (Constance Bennett-Brod Crawford). WARNER BROS. The men who will turn "This Is the Army" into a picture production will match the contribution of Sergeant Irving Berlin, who produced the big musical extravaganza on Broadway, by contribut ing their services without pay. Lt. Col. J. L. Warner and Hal Wallis will be co-producers. Michael Curtiz has been assigned to direct and Casey Robinson will collaborate on the screen play with Berlin. The men leave for New York as soon as Curtiz finishes "Casablanca." Mark Hellinger has been assigned to produce "I Wasn't Born Yesterday". . .Trio of pictures lined up for Benjamin Glazer's return to WB are — "The Pentacle." "Deep Valley" and "Broken Journey." First named will star Edward G. Robinson. "Deep Valley" is from a novel by Dan Totheroh who is writing the screenplay. . .Clifford Odets, writing the screenplay of "Rhapsody in Blue," is testing John Garfield for the role of George Gershwin... WB has received the War Department's permission to produce a two-reel Technicolor national defense short subject under title, "Transport Command." All star pictures are getting plenty of attention — what with Paramount's "Star Spangled Rhythm" and 20th's "Tales of Manhattan." Warners has hired David Butler to direct an all-star musical to go into production within the next thirty days. IN PRODUCTION— "Watch on the Rhine" (Bette Davis-Paul Lukas), "The Desert Song" (Dennis Morgan-Irene Manning), "Air Force" (John Garfield-Gig Young), "Adventures of Mark Twain" (Fredric March-Alexis Smith), "Princess O'Rourke" (Olivia de Havilland-Robert Cummings), "The Edge of Darkness" (Errol Flynn-Ann Sheridan). INDEPENDENT Remember Franklyn Warner and Fine Arts? That was the outfit that took over the defunct Grand National company and looked like a comer in the production field for a time. Warner made the supposed mistake of putting his dough into property and equipment; it might have been a mistake then but his assets are pretty valuable these days. At any rate there's a report circulating on the Coast that the trade will be hearing from Mr. Warner soon again. He's supposed to have lined up financing for a program of 18 pictures. Something new in a color short is promised in "Revolt of the Vegetables," just completed by producers W. C. Leavitt and Jack King under the direction of Phil Ryder. Based on the book by Aimee Torriani and Ed Roberts, it combines human actors and animation. In the cutting room now, it will be offered to distributors shortly. 22 FILM BULLETIN
