She falls for the guy. despite constant brushoffs, and grabs at the chance to marry him when Fields proposes, feeling that Hutton will be his mealticket. Fields, however, really falls in love w ith his wife after marriage, and. unable to bear the taunts of Broadwayites who knew his real motive, leaves her to seek a career on his ow n. I nable to rise above the lesser circuits. Fields returns to her and agrees to have her teach him a technique she feels will click. After months of intensive training, he gains a spot in Chicago's famed Chez Paree. only to learn that she was instrumental in the deal. Fired with the knowledge that Hutton will complete the engagement if he fails. Meeker goes on to become a solid smash. It is only when he learns that she will quit the stage to become a housewife if he registers that he realizes her great love for him and brings her onstage as "Mrs. Bennv Fields".
