John Harris Is Elected Head of Variety Clubs Pittsburgh — 'The first annual national convention of the Variety Clubs of America closed a highly successful two-day meeting at the local Variety headquarters on Sunday. Delegates from each of the club's fourteen tents attended. Two additional tents were named when Des Moines and Omaha were voted charters. Next year's convention will be held in April at Columbus. Ehrhorn following a hearing. Famous Theaters Corp., which has acquired all the assets of Publix Enterprises, was the only creditor present. Objection was raised only to one small application for fees. Declaration of a final dividend and discharge of the company from bankruptcy is now awaited. Oldknow Opening House Atlanta — Oscar Oldknow, southern manager of National Theater Supply, will soon open his first r'owntown Atlanta house, thereby intensifying a situation that is said to be the reason for recent establishment of Wil-Kin Theater Supply Corp. headed by Bob Wilby of Wilby-Kincey circuit. Wilby equipment firm reported making strong headway in supply field around here and will move soon into entire top floor of new Paramount exchange. Oldknow also is understood to be interested in a number of outlying houses. Defer Mandel Hearing , Hearing on a mandamus application of Henry Mandel, the builder, to compel Commissioner of Licenses Paul Moss to issue a license to erect a theater on the southeast corner of Madison Ave. and E. 79th St., was adjourned yesterday to Monday by Supreme Court Justice Carew Commissioner Moss previously refused to issue a license. Approves Counsel Fees A report approving allowance of the claim of Cravath, de Gersdorff, Swaine & Wood against Paramount for $26,666 has been signued by Spe cial Master John E. Joyce and sub mitted to Federal Jucge Coxe. Laughton for Korda Film Charles Laughton will play the title role in "Cyrano de Bergerac," which Alexander Korda will produce in England this summer. Penelope Dudley-Ward will play Roxanne. Korda cables that he has signed Vivian Leigh, London's nineteenyear-old stage sensation, to a fiveyear contract for the screen.
