Theaters Need Better Acoustics, Batsel Says West Coast Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Los Angeles — Insufficient attention has been paid thus far to the creation of ideal recording acoustics in studios and ideal reproducing acoustics in the theaters, Max C Batsel, RCA Photophone engineering chief, told the S. M. P. E. at the final session of its spring convention here yesterday. He stressed the need of sound-absorbing materials in theater auditoriums to prevent resonant conditions and reverberation. Through use of the new James A. Miller recording equipment, a director can have sound reproduced immediately and judge its quality while on the set, the inventor told the convention. The equipment, which was demonstrated, has ful1 range of frequencies and full vol ume range so as to reproduce full normal sound. The sound track is engraved on non-light sensitive film. By using a 16mm. sound-on-film projector many small motion picture theaters could be reopened, said A. Shapiro of the AMPRO Corp., Chicago, at the engineers' convention. Only one projector would be required; also no booths would be necessary as 16mm. film is not inflammable. The chief problem would be to obtain a sufficient supply of new features reduced to 16 mm. but Shapiro believes the producers will soon realize the extent of the new market. Pathe of France if furnishing many such films on 17% mm. stock. Selling Times Square Houses Two more Times Square theaters will be offered for sale June 6.
