PLEASING ROMANCE WITH PLENTY OF MUSIC AND GOOD COMEDY ATMOSPHERE MAKES BRIGHT ENTERTAINMENT. This B. I. P. feature has been given some very handsome settings with novelty effects, and with a breezy story and some jclever comedy and bright dialogue it proves very intelligent entertainment. There lis a pleasing double romance which lends itself to some delicious comedy situations, with a composer and a business executive making blind dates with a telephone operator and a gold digger respectively. But they get their dates mixed, and both couples go to the same ritzy night spot for the evening's dinner and entertainment. This is a very lavish set, and shows a revolving stage and other unique effects including a tricky dance floor, with numbered sections and the couples switching dance partners when the music stops and the men change partners with the girls on :orresponding numbered sections. In this way the mixed couples get straightened jut, with more comedy resulting. Zelma 5'Neal contributes the chief laughs with a charming personality and a real flair for comedy. The Three Sailors, the celebrated eccentric comedy trio, add a lot of gayety to the proceedings. Cast: Clifford Morrison, Wendy Barrie, Zelma O'Neal, Eric Rhodes, Olive Blakeney, 3ertha Belmore. NEAT LITTLE MUSICAL, ATTRACTIVE, TUNEFUL AND FUNNY, SHOULD 'LEASE AUDIENCES GENERALLY. Helped by the presence of Buddy Rogers, for whom there is a substantial waiting ludience, and with June Clyde as another American name of some value, this is a nice bit of entertainment that ought to Jo all right at the box-office. Its story is ight and more or less nonsensical, in keepng with the custom of musical comedies, jut there is enough liveliness, humor and novement in it to make the affair ride long with no dull moments. Motivating iction deals with the rivalry of Buddy, eader of a dance band, and June Clyde, »ho has a feminine aggregation in the same ine, in competing for a prize in the conest. Just when June is about to lose out is the result of some villainous machinaions, Buddy comes to her rescue and the wo of them come out tied for first hon>rs and about to be tied together for life. T T T Universal has signed Francis Lederer for "Magnificent Obsession," Warren Howe for "Showboat," and Pinky Tomlin, songwriter and singer, for "King Solomon of Broadway." T T T Bill Cody, who recently finished work in Spectrum's "Vanishing Riders," is now on tour with the Downie Bros. Circus. T T T Dorothy Fields will write the words for the Jerome Kern songs in RKO's "Love Song," Lily Pons vehicle. ▼ T T Rosalinde Russell gets the feminine lead opposite William Powell in M-G-M's "Black Chamber." Lawrence Weingarten will produce it. T T T Bayard Veiller has joined Universal to write "Bluebird's Eight Wives" for Karloff. The company also has bought Faith Baldwin's story, "Spinster Dinner," for Carole Lombard. T T T Robert Benchley's "How to Sleep" will be filmed as a short subject by M-G-M with Benchley himself lin the starring role. Nick Grinde is the director. T T T Al Martin is now writing "Speed Demon," which Reliable will make with Richard Talmadge as the star. Martin will also do the screenplay. Production starts in about three weeks. T T T Pandro Berman and Bernie Hyman, rival producers, clashed in the finals of the tenth annual motion picture tennis tournament. Berman teamed up with Solly Baiano, while Hyman's doubles partner was Frank X. Shields, Davis Cup player. Berman and Baiano won in straight sets, 8-6, 6-3. T T T Benny Rubin, who collaborated with Gertrude Purcell on the screenplay for "The Girl Friend," for Columbia, is now writing an original story, "Muldoon's Picnic," also for Columbia. He will also do the screenplay. T ▼ T "Escapade" has been selected as final title of the M-G-M picture formerly known as "Masquerade." William Powell is starred, with Luise Rainer, Viennese stage star, making her initial appearance in a Hollywood film, in the feminine lead.
