THE Thursday, June 13, 1935 OAILV $MPA Team Wins Match Play At Golf Tourney Film Execs Enjoy Grand Gala Golf Event at Progress By JACK HARROWER The Twenty-third Annual Film Daily Golf Tournament was unanimously voted the peer of them all by the film execs who turned out 1 in force to enjoy the event at the Progress Country Club at Purchase, N. Y. Over 160 golfers teed off in the Tournament, and at least 200 sat down to enjoy the evening banquet. It was a perfect day of sport from every angle. The Progress Club provided every facility for enjoyment on one of the most beautiful courses in the East. Ideal weather had everybody feeling great, and the program moved along without a hitch, due to the splendid work of the Committee and the cooperative spirit of the golfers. Of course the banquet in the evening was the big climax, with the distribution of the trophies and prizes. Toastmaster Jack Alicoate lived up to the ribbing traditions of this historic event, and all those called upon to speak kept the kidding note in the forefront. The highlight was the presentation of the awards to the AMPA team who evened their defeat last year by taking the M. P. Club team into camp in a very impressive and decisive fashion. Monroe Greenthai (Ampa) won 3 points from George Dembow (M. P. Club). Herbert Fecke (Ampa) won 3 points from Herbert Yates (M. P. Club). James Cron (Ampa) won 1 point from Phil Reisman (M. P. Club). Mitchell May, captain of the M. P. Club team, was the only one to score on the champs, winning 3 points from Tom Gerety, the Ampa captain. So it was 7 and 3 in favor of AMPA. So after Jack Alicoate had presented the Albee Cup to Mister Gerety for his winning aggregation, and the Film Daily individual gold medals, he said to Tom: "Be easy with the M. P. Club boys, for their hearts are breaking." Then Harry Brandt, manager of the M. P. Club outfit, made a speech of alibis, protestations and general denials. Harry gave the lowdown on his gang who had fallen down on him. He came right out and gave it as his solemn opinion that his boys had been bribed. That was the only possible way he could figure how the Ampa lads could have taken 'em over. The Toastmaster called on many prominent execs present to take a Jvv~w — some of them regular Tourna %ts ) Scenic Beauty There wasn't a guy at the tournament who did not agree that the Progress Country Club for sheer beauty, scenic landscape, and gorgeous grounds, was one of the best at which the Film Daily Golf Tournaments have been held. The Toastmaster paid a fine tribute to Maurice "Red" Kann, who blushed even redder. Charlie Pettijohn at the dais delivered a masterly oration. The two British execs — Arthur Dent and John Maxwell — took bows from the dais. Then Louis Nizer gave one of his suave addresses, and paid a tribute to Jack Alicoate for his work in organizing and supervising these annual Tournaments. Wires were received from Jay Emanuel, Will Hays and Tommy Meighan. Also one from Billy Brandt, sick in bed, who missed his first of the 23 tournaments. The distribution of the trophies and prizes then took place amidst great hilarity and enthusiasm, and all sorts of good natured spoofing. The affair was over well before midnight, and all hands voted it just about the best Tournament of the long series. Fined for Assaulting Checker In an action for assault and battery brought by Charles Elbreder, a Ross Federal checker, against John Mounds, manager of the Pai'k theater, Valley Park, Mo. Judge Sentenne in Kirkwood, Mo., found the defendant guilty. Mounds was fined and assessed all costs of the prosecution. Mounds objected to being checked, despite the fact that the Ross Federal representative carried credentials from M-G-M authorizing him to represent their interests at the exhibiton of their picture, "Forsaking All Others."
