T T T Warners having purchased the screen nights to "The Green Pastures," it is announced by Jack L. Warner, vice-president in charge of production, and Hal B. Wallis, chief associate production executive, that Marc Connelly, author of the play, has been signed to adapt "The Green Pastures" for the screen and to be co-director during its filming. T T T Jane Wyatt of the New York Social Register and more recently of the New York stage, has been signed by Fox to depict the leading feminine role opposite Warner Baxter in "Hard to Get." T T T Jack Larue, instead of Lyle Talbot, will play the role in "Special Agent" for which Talbot last week received a hurry call back to the First National studios. Talbot hopped across the continent by airplane and then found that the production heads had decided to put him into another picture soon to start "shooting." Bette Davis, George Brent, Ricardo Cortez and other prominent players will be seen in "Special Agent." r T r Additions to the casts of four pictures are anounced by M-G-M. Shirley Ross will be seen in "Glitter," in which Joan Crawford is starred. Robert Emmett O'Connuf has joined the Marx Brothers in "Night at the Opera." Edgar Kennedy will have a role in "I Am Joaquin," in which Joseph Calleia is to play the title role, and newcomers to the cast of "Pursuit," which is scheduled for production soon, include Sally Eilers, Harold Huber and Granville Bates. T T T Egon Brecher and John Bleifer have been engaged by Columbia for character roles in "The Black Room Mystery," starring Boris Karloff, with Marian Marsh as the feminine lead. Important roles in the large cast for this dramatic feature have already been assigned to Robert Allen, John Buckler, Fredrik Vogeding, Katherine De Mille, Thurston Hall, Robert Middlemass, Torben Meyer, Henry Kolker, Edward Van Sloan, Colin Tapley and Lois Lindsey. Roy William Netill is directing. T ▼ T "Woman Wanted" is the final title for the M-G-M picture formerly known as "Manhattan Madness." Joel McCrea and Maureen O'Sulli van have the leading roles in the film, which was directed by George Seitz. The cast includes Lewis Stone, Adrienne Ames and Louis Calhern. ▼ ▼ T Gene Lockhart, actor-author-producer, now appearing in a featured role in the Fox production, "Thunder in the Night," will stage and direct the Persian pantomime spectacle, "Sumurun," at the Hollywood Bowl as soon as he finishes his current screen assignment. ▼ T T A new screen "discovery" is introduced in RKO Radio's "Jalna" in nine-year-old Clifford Severn. Kay Johnson and Ian Hunter head the cast of the production, which is based on Mazo de la Roche's $10,000 prize winning novel of the same name. T T T Margaret Callahan, young Broadway player, and William Harrigan have been signed by RKO Radio for the new James Barton picture, still untitled, soon to go into production at the Hollywood studios. Charles Vidor will direct. Joel Sayre is writing the screenplay. T T T "Dressed To Thrill" is the final title for "The Dressmaker," Tutta Rolf's fh*st starring vehicle for Fox. Miss Rolf appears opposite Clive Brook. T T T Gilbert Roland, originally assigned to the role of Felipe, the second lead in the forthcoming Fox production, "Ramona," has been promoted to the role of Allesandro, the first lead in the picture. Eugene Forde will direct the film which has been adapted from the original story by Lamar Trotti. T T T Charles Bickford will be very busy, to say the least. Following his engagement in "Rose of the Rancho," at Paramount, he will work in "East of Java," for Universal. He will follow the Universal assignment by playing in "Hell Afloat," for M-G-M. T ▼ T Florence Ryan, Sol Lesser's secretary, and Ruth Hoereth, also with the Lesser organization, have returned to Hollywood from a five weeks vacation in New York, Philadelphia, Atlantic City and other Eastern cities. ▼ T T "Steamboat 'Round The Bend" has been selected as the definite title for the new Will Rogers-Fox film starring picture previously announced as "Steamboat Bill." T T T Paramount cast assignments: Claude King, William Brown, Olaf Hytten for "The Last Outpost"; James Blakely, Douglas Fowley for "Two for Tonight"; Charlotte Granville for "Rose of the Rancho." 13 VITAPHONE SH0RT,\ NOW IN CUTTING ROOM Production activities at the Brooklyn Vitaphone studios are being kept at a high pace with 13 shorts in the hands of the studio cutters being readied for early release, Sam Sax, production chief, announces. The two-reelers are: "Step by Step," with Hal LeRoy; "Surprise," with the Duncan Sisters, and "Dublin in Brass," with Morton Downey, all "Broadway Brevities." The three comedies feature the Yacht Club Boys in "The Vodka Boatmen"; Shemp Howard and Rosco Ates in "On the Wagon," and Bob Hope in "Watch the Birdie." The one-reelers are: "Wee Men," featuring Singer's Midgets and an untitled short featuring the Radio Ramblers, both "Pepper Pots." Three "Melody Masters" featuring Phil Spitalny's All-Girl Band, Charles Ahearn's Orchestra and Johnny Green's Orchestra; "Vitaphone Casino," with Paul Duke, Babs Ryan and Brothers, Buster West and the Radio Rubes; and "Vitaphone Music Hall," featuring Ray Hulin and Seal, Harry Burns and Company and the Honey Boys, both in Vitaphone's series of "Big Time" Vaudeville Units. Edison Foundation Formed As Tribute to Late Genius To create a living tribute to the inventor whose genius played a big part in the field of electricity and entertainment, the Thomas Alva Edison Foundation has been incorporated in New York State by William S. Barstow, president of Edison Pioneers; Howell H. Barnes, Jr., L. W. W. Morrow, editor of "Electrical World," and Prof. Charles F. Scott of Yale, representing American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and W. S. Mallory and F. A. Scheffler of Edison Pioneers. Advancement and diffusion of knowledge in the fields of physics, chemistry and the engineering arts and sciences will be the particular objects of the group. One of the aims also is to continue and perpetuate Edison scholarships, initiated by Mr. Edison, for the better preparation of American youth along technical educational lines.
