T T T Sig Herzig, whose original stoi-y, "Amateurs on Parade," will be the initial picture Lewis Gensler will produce for Paramount, is writing the screenplay with Jane Storm. T T v Howard Estabrook and Theresa Helburn will address the American Association of University Women at the Ambassador Hotel June 26th. ▼ T T Adele Buffington, who recently completed the screenplay for "Hi Gaucho," an outdoor musical which Tommy Atkins will direct, is writing the script for "Powdersmoke Range," which Wallace Fox will direct for RKO. T T T Gene Lockhart, the screen comedian, is chairman of the newly organized Good Story Club. Those desiring membership in the organization are urged to contribute their best story, suitable for mixed company. In return, they will be sent unusual anecdotes and amusing stories. There are no dues or obligations. ▼ T T Frank Dazey and Agnes Christine Johnston, at Fox, writing a Shirley Temple story, are prolific writers. Miss Johnston has sold "Marry Me Not" to the Cosmopolitan Magazine and "Bad Lands" to Liberty. Good Housekeeping has taken her "Hotel for Two." Mr. Dazey has sold "Unconscious" to Universal while his "13 Hours by Air" is scheduled for early production at Paramount. Ultra-Violet Ray Diffuser Used in Film The ultra-violet ray diffuser, one of the latest of scientific marvels at the California Institute of Technology, turned actor last week. It provided an arabesque of electric sparks for a weird effect in "Mad Love" at the M-G-M studios. On an insulated stage, sparks cracked about the camera, the air became charged with violet luminescence and a circle of light was thrown about the head of Edward Brophy. in a weird scene with Peter Lorre. On the same stage a 200-foot flash of artificial lightning with its accompanying miniature thunder, was filmed and recorded for another detail of the same fantastic scene ! vises for Thalberg. His first credit will be on "China Seas," followed by "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Forty Days of Musa Dagh." He has supervised "Smilin' Through," "Redheaded Woman," "The Guardsman" and "The Cuban Love Song." ▼ T T Grant Withers has been added to the cast of "Storm Over the Andes," which Christy Cabanne is directing at Universal. It stars Jack Holt. t ▼ v "Old Man Rhythm," musical romance which marks Charles Buddy Rogers' return to the American screen after several years as a band leader, has been completed at the RKO Radio studios under the direction of Edward Ludwig. Featured with Rogers are Barbara Kent, Grace Bradley, George Barbier, Betty Grable, Ertic Blore, Erik Rhodes, Dave Chasen, Evelyn Poe and Johnny Mercer, who also wrote the lyrics for the production. ZaSu Pitts and Hugh O'Connell, scheduled to make two pictures for Universal, will appear first in "She Gets Her Man." Originally, "Unconscious" was to have been filmed first. William Nigh will direct "She Gets Her Man," with cast also including Lucien Littlefield, Isabel Jewell, Guinn Williams, Stanley Price and Florence Dudley. ▼ TV Hardie Albright has been signed by Edward Small to complete the cast of "Red Salute," Reliance production, with Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Young, Cliff Edwards, Ruth Donnelly and others. T T ▼ M-G-M has acquired "Woman of Spain," the story by Scott O'Dell. ▼ TV RKO Radio Pictures has given long-term contracts to Ben Holmes, director, and Dorothy Yost, scenarist. Miss Yost is now writing the screenplay for "Freckles." T T ▼ Chester Morris will have the leading role in M-G-M's "Pursuit," which Edwin L. Marin will direct 1 from a script based on "Wild Goose, Foreign Flashes Paris — Josephine Baker, colored headliner, is to make a film in French and English before leaving for the U. S. She also is said to be going to Hollywood next year for a Universal film. Rome — Carmine Gallone will produce and direct Italian and English versions of "Christopher Columbus". Lisbon — A consortium consisting of Tobis Portuguesa and Films Luis Machado was recently formed to make at least three Portuguese features a year. London — Edwina Booth is going to France to continue recuperating from her mysterious ailment. Paris — Raimu, Murat, Annabella and Harry Baur are among French stars who are expected to go to Hollywood next fall. Iowa Items Des Moines — Cecil G. Mulanix, former owner of the Varsity here, has leased a 400-seat theater in Beaverdale, suburb, and will open it about July 15. The place was built sometime ago but never operated. E. M. Garbett recently purchased the Varsity. Castle theater, Manchester, la., has opened with W. A. Dutton as manager. He also operates the Plaza. Minnesota Items Thief River Falls — Thief River Falls Theater Co. will reopen the Lyceum, bought from Roy Morgan. Sacred Heart — The Cozy has been leased by V. S. McCarthy, manager of a northwest circuit. Badger — The Badger has reopened with new equipment. Holdingford — The local movie house has opened with new sound equipment. C. C. Craemer of Minneapolis is manager. Pittsburgh Briefs Pittsburgh— The Fulton will be the only local house to close for the summer. Manny Greenwald of local U. A. publicity staff off to Detroit to exploit "Escape Me Never." Al Smith, recent manager of the Pitt, going into the night club business here. Joe Blowitz of the Manor named in charge of the annual Variety Club outing. Para. Legit Deal for 2 Years Deal under which Paramount will finance plays written by five "big name" authors will run for two years, with options. The agreemet is now set, with only details remaining to be settled. Authors in the arrangement are Robert Sherwood, Sidney Howard, Philip Barry, Maxwell Anderson and Lawrence Stallings. They are "Lips In The Dark," by Will Jason and Val Burton, and "Isn't Love The Sweetest Thing," by Lou Alter and Jack Scholl. ▼ ▼ ▼ The second Mickey Mouse cartoon in Technicolor is to be "Mickey's Garden." Its early release through United Artists is announced by the Walt Disney studios in Hollywood. Ian Keith has been signed by RKO Radio for "The Three Musketeers," now in production with Rowland V. Lee directing. ▼ ▼ ▼ Warren Hull, Broadway player recently signed to a long term Warner contract, has been assigned the male lead in "Living Up to Lizzie." Margaret Lindsay plays opposite. ▼ ▼ ▼ Forthcoming Warner picture based on Lord Tennyson's poem about the Battle of Balaclava will be entitled "The Charge of the Light Brigade" instead of "The Charge of the 600," as was first announced. ▼ ▼ ▼ Columbia's "Boris Karloff starring vehicle, which for a time carried the working title of "The Black Room Mystery," has been permanently named "The Black Room."
