M. NEWS of the DAY!?, Chicago — John F. Burhorn, formerly general manager of McCollum's circuit and up to recently in charge of the Capitol, Whiting, Ind., is back in the Chicago vicinity as manager of the Gayety, South Chicago. Leadwood, Mo. — The Community theater has been taken over by Lead Belt Amusement Co. from A. B. Deremiah. The house had been dark but is operating again. Scranton — Joe E. Brown's latest Warner comedy, "Alibi Ike," opened to the biggest midnite show business in two years at the Family Theater here. Monetti, Mo. — M. E. Gillioz has transferred the Gillioz theater to L. L. Lewis. East St. Louis, 111. — Two bandits recently held up and robbed Mrs. Louis Menges, wife of State Senator Menges, and two companions of $300 in cash and their automobile. The money constituted receipts of Menges' two theaters here. San Antonio — Strand, West Houston St. house, recently went Screeno twice weekly. There are now five local theaters having this new game two nights each week. Karnes City, Tex. — Karnes City Amusement Co. has been chartered with a capital stock of $3,000. Incorporators are D. F. Luckie, E. F. Jurena, and Mrs. Lottie Jurena. D. F. Luckie recently took over the Karnes theater from H. Wanda Hall. Grindstone, Pa. — Joe Basit, operator of the Grindstone theater here for a number of years, died at his home last week. Dixonville, Pa. — The Dixonville theater here has been taken over by Helene Walker, secretary to J. F. Scott, Johnstown and Altoona exhibitor. The house was formerly operated by Philip Samuels. Clarksville, Mo. — Mrs. George Wells and J. H. Backer have taken over the Clarksville theater. The house has reopened. Pittsburgh Briefs Pittsburgh — The Joe Feldmans (he's the publicity chief for Warners here) moved into a new home in Mt. Lebanon. Universal office honored Al Barnett with a party on his second anniversary as manager of the local exchange. Pete Petepegadiotes sold his interests in the Capitol and Colonial theaters in Farrell, Pa., to John and Chris Lapros. Pete took over the Mock theater in Girard, O. Tom Shanahan of the Princess in Donora branched out into the restaurant business, opening one of the largest eating palaces in western Pennsylvania in Wilkinsburg. Fred Herrington, secretary of the M. P. T. O. of W. Va., is back from his final trip this year to Harrisburg. With closing of the code office, Emmaline Fineberg is representing the Film Board of Trade. N. J. Betting Bill Killed The New Jersey Legislature has killed a bill legalizing pari mutuel betting in connection with dog racing if so decided through local referendums. Leo Carrillo on Tour Leo Carrillo opens a personal appearance tour in Chicago on July 12, after which date he will visit Detroit, Washington and Boston. The deal was arranged by the Leo Morrison office. St. Louis Squibs St. Louis — President Fred Wehrenberg of the M. P. T. O. headed a delegation to Jefferson City this week to confer with the state auditor on ways and means of passing along the state's 1 per cent sales tax to patrons. Leto Hill, Dave Nelson, Clarence Kaiman, Dinty Moore, Mat Schulter and H. W. Wirth accompanied Wehrenberg. The Shubert and Orpheum theaters, Warner first-runs, have reverted to single features. The Grand Central theater closed Sunday for the summer. Also dark are the Ambassador, St. Louis and Lyric. Tax Hits Ontario Houses Toronto — Picture theater grosses are being substantially hurt by the new Ontario ' admission tax which applies to admissions of five cents and up, according to leading theater men here. Estimate is made that the levy, which became effective June 1, will raise $1,500,000 annually. RKO Meeting Routine Monthly meeting of the RKO Radio board of directors was held yesterday. The meeting was described as routine. Cast for James Barton Film Addison Randall has been cast i RKO's next James Barton picture, as yet untitled. Others cast to date are Maureen Delaney and Margaret Callahan. Charles Vidor directs, Cliff Reid supervises.
