Van Schmus, managing director of the Radio City Music Hall, yesterday hosted a cocktail reception to Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester in the theater's studio apartment. Laughton's latest picture, "They Knew What They Wanted," is current at the Music Hall. Will Appeal N. Y. Censor Ban on French Feature Appeal to the New York State Board of Regents will be made by Foreign Films, Inc., within the next two weeks for a reversal of the New York Censor's ban on the French film "Have You Nothing To Declare?" being distributed here by Foreign Films. Company will also hold private screenings of the picture for critics and review boards to get a compilation of opinions to present to the Regents. Picture was termed indecent nad immoral by the Censor Board. Wilmington Stockholder Suit vs. Loew's Deferred Wilmington, Del. — By agreement of counsel, stockholder's suit brought by Arnold Herrman against Loew's, Inc., which was scheduled for hearing yesterday morning in the New Castle County Chancerv Court here has been continued. Date for the hearing will be set later. Herrman filed suit on Feb. 28, 1939 charging the directors and executives with conspiracy and fraud in the formation of Twentieth Century Pictures. Inc., now Twentieth CenturyFox Film Corp., at the expense of Loew stockholders. Plaintiff asked preliminary injunction restrainine defendants from disposing: of stock of Twentieth Centurv until further notice of the Chancellor, and that a writ of sequestration be issued seauesterine and seizin? all stock of Loew's, Inc., until further determination of the suit. Para. Buvs More Air Time To Plug "World in Flames' Paramount, yesterday bought additional air time for pings for its newsreel feature, "World In Flames," deal having been closed by Buchanan & Co., P^ra. agency, for almost the entire Mutual network for a 15minute program exploiting the film. Approximately 150 MBS outlets will be utilized. A. M. Goodman, UA Branch Head, Suffers Heart Attack Cleveland— A. M. Goodman. United Artists branch manager, stricken while nlavins: golf at the Manikiki <^olf Club, was rushed to Lakeside Hospital where his illness was diae:nos°d as a heart attack. He is now at bis home where he will be confined for a rest of several months. William Peterson Dead Brentwood, Calif. — William Peterson. 55, operator of the Delta Theater, died of a heart attack. Argentina Imports Of U. S. Pix Jumps Buenos Aires (By Air Mail) — During the first seven months of 1940 Argentina showed 204 American pictures, an increase of 27 over the same months of 1939. Argentine pictures for the same period dropped three to 31; French dropped two to 22; Mexican increased from two to four; British dropped from 10 to three; German from fiye to two, and Spanish from six to one. Film Workers Register Under Draft Law Today In company with tens of thousands of others of draft age, industry workers will register today for possible military service. General company practice is to give employes time off to do so if it is impossible for them to do so before or after office hours. Theater Drive to Mark Balaban's Anniversary Chicago — A drive for greater theater attendance will be launched by Paramount's affiliated theaters in the central territory shortly as a way to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Barney Balaban's presidency of Paramount. Plans for the celebration are now in work. Rodcrers Off for Coast On Regular Studio Visit W. F. Rodgers, M-G-M general sales manager, leaves today for the Coast for his regular studio visit. Rodgers plans to look at completed and partially-completed product and discuss future pictures with studio officials. Off for NWMP Regina Bow West Coast Bureau of THE FILM \DAILY Hollywood — Madeleine Carroll. Preston Foster, Robert Preston and Lvnne Overman trained out last nieht, headed for the Reaina premiere of NWMP. PEGGY DICGINS, has returned to the Coast following a brief New York vacation. Lightstone, Montreal Theater Operator, Dead Montreal — Joseph Lightstone, 50, head of Variety Amusements, operating the Orpheum and Mayf air Theaters, and a brother of Mme. Pauline Donalda, internationally famous diva, collapsed and died of a heart attack in the Mount Royal Hotel where he lived, yesterday. Lightstone had worked actively right along, and was at his office Monday. For the past 15 years, he had been connected with different Montreal theaters. Before going to the Orpheum he was general manager of the Princess Theater. He is survived by his wife and a son, Owen. Tugoat Annie Day Set Tacoma, Wash. — Flotilla of approximately 300 ships of every variety will participate in Tugboat Annie Day program, feature of the world premiere here Friday of Warners "Tugboat Annie Sails Again."
