Glaser, operator of the Paradise at Faribault, has decided to close that house on Nov. 21 because of inability to contract sufficient supply of class "A" pictures. Glaser, who also operates the Lido in Faribault, told Strom that house would continue in operation with available product. The Paradise is the "A" theater of that city. Strom Appeals to Governor Following receipt by Strom of word that Rodgers had suggested the present situation in Minnesota, as to pictures, could be cleared up immediately by repeal of the antifive law, the Allied executive secretary wrote Governor Stassen as follows: "In behalf of independent exhibitor members of this association, will you please make known your position with reference to calling a special session of the legislature fcr the purpose of repealing the act known as the anti-blocks-of-five law?" om Page 1 ) Replying to Strom's communication the Governor wrote: "I have absolutely no intention of calling a special session for the purpose ot reconsidering the anti-five law, nor for any other purpose. The next session contemplated for the Minnesota legislature will be in January, 1943." This statement by Governor Stassen definitely spikes all rumors the anti-five law may be repealed any time before the '43 session. Record Biz for Indies With four of the five major companies still refusing to sell in the state under the anti-five law because of the New York consent decree, other firms not bound by the decree are doing a record business. Columbia, as an illustration, formerly got along here with four to eight prints on each feature. It now is using 16 to 20 on practically every picture on its list. In addition, this firm now is servicing 300 houses as compared with a maximum of approximately 100 in previous seasons. Other companies not bound by the decree report similar record business. Lieut. Halpern Assisting Hirliman on Marine Film Coral Gables, Fla. — Lieut. William A. Halpern, USMC, is serving as assistant director for "Here Comes the Marines," which George Hirliman is producing at Colonnade. On its completion, Halpern will go to Lakeland to make a training film on the amphibious tractor used by the Marine Corps to land troops on hostile beaches. Election was held on Oct. 23 and the WBAOE is the first industry white collar group to win an NLRB election. Union is unaffiliated at present time but possibility exists it may join the Screen Office and Employes Guild, Local 109, CIO, or at least vote on such affiliation. Local 109 has chapters at Columbia, Loew's and RKO. Columbia management has agreed to a NLRB consent election and the union has requested a similar vote for the Loew's unit.
