EQUIPMENT NEWS l&ftt Friday, April 2, 1948 Brick-Tile Research Studies In Progress With theater architects and buildingcontractors keenly interested in the results, research studies aimed at technical aavancement in the use and production of brick and tile are being carried on in seven universities and technical institutions, and at the National Bureau of standards in Washington. The studies are due to be completed next year, according' to Roy A. Shipley, president of the Structural Clay Products Institute, national organization of brick and tile manufacturers. They are being conducted with the aid of a grant from the Office of Technical Services of the Department of Commerce. The tensile strength and design of reinforced tile-concrete beams are the subjects of tests being made at the University of Texas. At Virginia Polytechnic Institute, a study of the effect of brick texture on the bond between the brick and the mortar used in building walls is in progress. Various finishes and mortar formulas are being used. The moisture-resisting properties of structural facing tile are being studied at the University of Minnesota; where RO test panels are being utilized. At the University of Illinois, research involves factors affecting variations in the sizes of brick and tile, and at Iowa State College the work involves lamination of structural clay products. The New York State College of Ceramics is studying methods of manufacturing the new modular or standardized sizes of brick from soft clay. At North Carolina State College the research is concerned with development of light-weight structural clay products. The National Bureau of Standards is studying use of de-aired clay in manufacturing brick and tile. Ram-co Service Bar Meets Theater Needs A complete line of models to meet the needs of the carbonated beverage field has been introduced by the Ramco Company, Cleveland, 0. The Ram-co Service Bar includes a Hudson constant pressure carbonator, two s.ainless steel syrup tanks, compressor, sweet water bath, large cooling coils, and drinking water faucet. The models can be had for ice operation where electricity is not available. The Hudson Three-Way pressure drink dispenser provides any two flavors, plus sparkling soda, all from the same dispensing faucet with a mere flick of the wrist. It's the Asror, converted from a store buik'ing, and operated by the Colonial Theaters Corp. of Valdese, N. C. OHE Grants Theater Permit On Basis of Lower Rents By proving that construction of a large motion picture theater would reduce rents in its neighboring residential project, the New York Life Insurance Company was granted authority by Housing Expediter Tighe E. Woods to erect the playhouse at an estimated cost of $838,OCO in the Flushing Meadow Housing Project. Rents would have had to be increased from $1 to $1.50 a room had the okay not been granted, said a spokesman of the insurance company. House, a 2,000-seater, will be operated by the Century Circuit. Bronx Theater Sold Vela Management Corp. bought from the Walton Management Corp. the one-story and cellar brick building containing 18 stores and a movie theater at 252 to 268 St. Anns Avenue, Bronx. Parking facilities for 500 cars will be provided. Theater will have a stage to accommodate touring attractions and provision will be made for television when available in the territory. Manos is headed by George A. Manos. Circuit now has 15 stands in Eastern Ohio.
