New Invention For Camera (Special to THE FILM DAILY) Hollywood — Antonio Gaudio, veteran cameraman, has forwarded to the patent office in Washington, an invention called the magnification focusing telescope for camera attachment. Whale Contest for Students Erie, Pa.— With the aid of the Posl Dispatch Herald, N. C. Wagner, of the Perry theater, ran a whale con test for school children which netted linn front-page publicity for a week preceding the showing of "Down to the Sea in Ships." Another tie-up occurred through a private showing of the production to the school teachers of the town. Epidemic Close Midland Theater (Special to THE FILM DAILY) Pittsburgh — Although the city authorities recently permitted the Midland to open, the state authorities have closed the house indefinitely. An epidemic of smallpox is the cause, cause. "Bicycling" Measure Passed (Special to THE FILM DAILY1 Kansas City — A measure has been passed by the Film Board of Trade against the "bicycling" of films. A committee has been appointed to investigate all communities where films are held without reason. Anderson Forms New Association (Special to THE FILM DAILY) Charlotte, N. C— H. H. Anderson, former owner of a chain of Corolina theaters and until recently associated with Laurence Lester in the operation of the Strand here, has become associated with J. U. McCormick and C. E. Peppiatt in an accessory and supply house. Fowler to Run Dallas Houses (Special to THE FILM DAILY) Dallas — Bruce Fowler has been appointed manager of the Parar..oun» theaters, the Red Mill, Queens and Chrystal Palace. Bruce formerly managed the Olympic, Victoria and Elmwood at Buffalo and more recently the Indiana theaters at "'"erre Haute, Ind. for Paramount. Navy Helps "Masters of Men." _ Minneapolis — As an exploitation tie-up on "Masters of Men," a parade was held to which the Navy contributed a band and in which the Naval Marine Post marched, carrying the ship's bell of the U. S. S. Minneapolis, of Spanish-American War fame. There was a float on which was mounted the 24-sheet and two men dressed as naval blue jackets boxed. This scene was taken from the picture where Cullen Landis as Halpin wins a decision in a boxing bout on board ship. Several thousand persons saw the parade. Gown Contest A Winner Boston— rA big exploitation stum was recently put over by Ed. Hurley of F. B. 6. between the Tremont Temple, the Telegram and Houghton and Dutton's department store for "Thehna." Daily from April 1st until April 28th the Telegram carried a story on the front page on a contest to out-dress lane Novak. $500 in cash was offered to the girls of Greater Boston to make their own gowns, with the result that 110 entered the affair, with 87 of these entering the fashion narade held for the selection of the winners. The contest opened the day that "Thelma" opened at the Tremont for a three week run and the Telegram 111 announcing it gave it a three column head on the front page. The prizes were put up by the paper and the department store. At the opening of the contest Houghton and Dutton store turned over their entire mainfloor and two windows on the principal street, with 400 large cards printed and hung up on the walls on different floors.
