New York Bryant 8181 >* Gregory Bernasek Circuit in Hands of Receivers Cliicago — Gregory Bernasek circuit has been tlirown into receivership, making the third chain to be placed into hands of a receiver. Both Gregory and Bernasek are out, it is understood, with the Chicago Title and Trust Co. in charge. Houses in the circuit are: La Grange, La Grange; Parthenon, Berwyn; Palace, Cicero, and an interest in the Milo here. A new house is under construction for the firm at Gary, Ind. Tiic Illinois and Gayety at Ottawa, 111., were disposed of a few weeks ago. Weiss Heads Norfolk Theaters Norfolk, Va. — Harry H. Weiss, formerly of Birmingham, has been named city manager here for Loew's, which has five local houses. They are: Loew's State, Granby, Norva, Colonial and Strand. The four last named are Wilnier & Vincent houses, brought under operation of Loew's through a pooling arrangement. Robert Ungerfeld has succeeded as manager of Loew's Temple, Birmingham. Competition Ended at Hickory, N. C. Hickory, N. C. — Hickory Amusement Co., owned by J. F. Miller has purchased the Rivoli from Lee Enterprises. The deal places all three of the city's theaters under ownership and management of Miller, who, in addition to the Rivoli, owns the Pastime and Grand. DALY PAUL GULICK, Universal's genial publicity chief, has found the ideal vacation spot — for him. He is at Chamberlain, Me., having taken a cottage on the coast. He can step out of his front door right into the surf. He also can step out of his back door right onto a golf-links. He sends word that he expects to go bathing some day before he returns. Sid Grauman is selling tickets at 60 different Los Angeles and southern California locations for "White Shadows of the South Seas." Harry D. Goldberg and Arthur Brilant spent the week-end on Fire Island wisecracking for the two whole days. Brilant is writing a new play, but didn't get a solitary idea. Week-end a total loss. Bebe Daniels yesterday was slated to take off from Los Angeles in a7i airplane jump to Salt Lake City, en route to New York. Exhibitor apathy, caused by the sound picture hysteria, is not holding back sales of Columbia product, chiefly because Cecil E., Maberry refuses to let it. Maberry has been on the road almost continously since taking over the Columbia post, and has just returned to New York from the Middle West. Bert Margolies, veteran publicist, is handling the Roxy publicity department during absence of Martha Wilchinski. "Scarlet Lady" Opening "The Scarlet Lady," first Columbia roadshow, opens tonight for a run at the Embassy, New York. 'Glorious Betsy" Run Continues New Orleans — "Glorious Betsy" continues at the Tudor. Now in its sixth week this picture has caught popular fancy and its drawing power is strong. Big Feature Rights Buys Series Louisville — Big Feature Rights Corp. has acquired distribution in this territory of the series of four pictures Buck Jones is making for the independent market. Charles Schwerin recently was here to close the deal with Lee L. Goldburg. Arthur J. Lamb Dead Providence — Arthur J. Lamb, pic-f ture producer, song writer and playwright, died here at the Miriam Hospital from embolism. About three years ago he produced a series of short subjects at New York, starring Violet Mersereau. Fight Films Bring Federal Charge Louisville — Plea of not guilty has been entered by Joseph Steurle, manager of the Walnut, to charge of violating the Federal law prohibiting interstate transportation of fight films, as a result of showing the Tunney-Heeney fight pictures. He was held in bail of $1,000 for the October term of Federal Court. Handling Gov't Products Sydney — M-G-M will distribute the Commonwealth and Dominion Governments' series in Australia ancf New Zealand.
