HYNES 8 TALKERS RELEASED BY "U"~-9 MORE TO COME Universal has released eight feature talkers since Jan. 1. Two synchruiiized pictures were released before that date. The remainder ol the season will see launching of nine more feature talkers and sound shorts. In taking this step, Universal is not receding from its former position, the company believing that sound-on-film is the better system. The question of playdates, and protection of accounts are causes of the new policy. Stamford House Goes Sound Stamford, Conn. — The Stamford, for many years a vaudeville house is now featuring sound pictures and has started an innovation of reserving a few rows of seats in the front of the balcony for those who do not wish to stand on line. Stillman Reverting to Old Policy Cleveland — The Stillman will revert to its old policy of continuous shows, continuing runs and popular prices starting April 7 with "Coquette." The Stillman inaugurated a reserved seat policy with two shows a day at $2 top on March 2nd with the opening of "The Broadway Melody." While this run was a success, it was decided that this is not the time of year to continue with the roadshow policy. Day and Date for Netoco Boston — The remodelled Globe operated by Netoco together with the Casino and Modern and Beacon are to run first runs day and date. This will be the first time locally since the old Chaplin contracts that the four houses will operate a day and date policy. Joins Brunswick Cue Service Chicago — Marie Pierson has joined the Brunswick-Balke-Collender cueing department. She formerly was with the Kxhibitors' Cueing Service. Wiring Uniontown House Uniontown, Pa. — Sound equipment is being installed at the Penn while alterations are being made. Wiring Waynesburg, Pa., House \\'aynesburg, Pa. — Western Electric equipment is being installed at the Eclipse. Interchangeable London — All Tiffany-Stahl sound and dialogue pictures on the 1929-30 program made on the RCA Photophone sound device will be available for bookings by all exhibitors regardless of the sound reproducing device their house is equipped with, it is announced here. The program consist of 52 features, the first "Lucky Boy," with George Jessel. French Sound Company Leases Menchen Studio Hashintjton Bureau of TUB FILM DAILY Washington — Societe Francaise des F-"ilms Sonores Tobis, of France, a subsidiary of the German Tobis combine, has rented the Menchen studios at Epinay, near Paris, according to the M. P. Section of the Dept. of Commerce. The studio will be equipped for sound pictures. The manufacture of Tobis reproducers will be concentrated in Paris. SYNCOPHONE PLANS TO EXPAND THfiyOUT NATION Oconto, Wis. — Field forces of the Merritt Syncophone Co., manufacturer and distributor of synchronous and non-synchronous devices, now is being organized, with the firm expecting to invade various keys within the next 90 davs. Syncophone was developed by A. L. Merritt, local theater owner, for use in his Gem theater here. When other theater owners became interested in the equipment, he formed a company, composed exclusively of exliibitors. Now, the machine has been made synchronous. Automatic controls are claimed as one of several exclusive features. The equipment sells for $750, including two synchronizing devices (one for each machine), one amplifier, with tubes and two speakers. Kansas House Wired Lawrence, Kans. — Sound equipment is being installed at the Strand while the house is being redecorated.
