THE Monday, July 15, 1929 DAILY 33 Radio Broadcasting Important Cog in RKO Exploitation Plan Special exploitation for RKO's new line-up is now taking form. The company's relations with RCA and the National Broadcasting Co. make it feasible to use radio broadcasting throughout the country for cooperative tie-ups. In the case of "Rio Rita." for instance, an hour of actual production will be broadcasted under auspices of a well known radio advertiser. Others will be arranged for different pictures. Radio anticipates making further tie-ups with national advertisers, similar to the "Lucky Strike" cigarette campaign arranged with Lord and Thomas and Logan in which Betty ( ompson was featured. The weekly RKO hour from WEAF and asso ciate stations in the "blue" network will continue to include material from various Radio Pictures. Song numbers, theme and otherwise, will receive particular attention. Sheet music will be published by Harms. Inc. RC Vs control of Victor will undoubtedly result in a consistent plugging of Radio players and music. In regard to the Rudy Yallce picture, "The Vagabond Lover," an extensive campaign is planned. Aspires to make enough money in pictures to enable her to retire. Wants to get married then — not before. Hopes to have as many children as her mother — five. * * * Max Ree, now art director and costume designer at RKO, was associated with several New York stage productions before coming to the Coast. He was with First National for several months and also designed costumes at M-G-M and for "The Wedding March." * * * Two years ago when Ann Greenway was playing at the Keith, Orpheum, Los Angeles, she spent a motorman's holiday on the old FBO lot playing an extra bit. Now she has returned to that lot, known as the RKO Studios, as a talking and singing star. She was born in Alexandria, Egypt, but came to this country at the age of two. * * * While serving with the Russian Army, Ivan Lebedeff had the distinction of capturing Lieutenant General von Fabarius at Nevel, said to have been the only German general taken prisoner during the World War. * * * Malcolm St. Clair was a newspaper cartoonist before entering pictures. He gained his early training at Mack Sennett's. He made several outstanding pictures at Paramount before joining RKO. George B. Seitz was an actor and playwright before entering pictures. He directed for Pathe for several years before coming to the Coast. Mi lias directed for Paramount, Fox, Columbia, Universal and Pathe-De Mille. * * * We first met Nick Musuraca when he was learning the camera at the old Vitagraph studio in Brooklyn. Nick recently photographed "Side Street." directed by Mai St. (lair, and is now co-photographing "The Delightful Rogue," with Jack Mac Kenzie. * * * Eugene Walter, who wrote "Paid in Full" and "The Easiest Way," is the author of a series of lectures published under the title of "How to Write a Play." Born in Cleveland, he gravitated to the newspaper game after his attendance at public schools. During the Spanish-American War, he was a member of the First Volunteer Cavalry. * * * Leo Tover did his first camera ivork at Eastern, studios. He is one of the handsomest cameramen on the Coast, but prefers to be behind, the camera, instead of in front of it. * ..* * Russell Mack, who has directed dialogue on RKO pictures, was a New York actor before becoming interested in pictures. * * * Lou Sarecky tvas at one time a tumbler with a team of acrobats, but he never "loses his head" no nuitter how vexatious the problem. He was also a secretary to Governor Sulzer of New York. The former tumbler gained most of his groundwork for pictures at the Paramount Long Island studio, where William LeBaron lost no time in recognizing his ability. * * * Randolph Bartlett is a graduate of the magazine and publicity fields. * * * Although young in years, Pandro Berman is a veteran film editor.
