Jolson En Route to Coast Al Jolson and his wife, Ruby Keeler, are en route via the Panama Canal to California where they are expected to arrive shortly for a stay of several months. Jolson will begin his next Vitaphone picture for Warners in the course of a few weeks. This will be "Mammy," the story of which is taken from Irving Berlin's play, "Mr. Bones." Berlin too is the composer of the songs which Jolson will introduce in this new all-talking, allsinging production. Panama Manager in N. Y. Harry Novak, Paramount branch manager at Cristobal, Panama Canal Zone, is in New York this week for a conference with J. H. Se.delman, assistant general manager of Paramount's foreign department, regarding distribution plans for the new season in his territory and for a visit with relatives. New R-K-O Matinee Radio Feature Yesterday over YVEAF and N. B. C's network a new feature was introduced when Radio-Keith-Orpheum started a special R-K-O matinee half hour, which is to be presented regularly at 5. P. M. On the opening program Charles W. Hamp was master of ceremonies. Six Install B. T. P. Apparatus London — Six sets of British Talking Picture sound apparatuses have been installed here. Houses equipped include; Summerland, Muswell Hill; Oxford, St. Helens; Kennington, Kennington; Carlton, Swansea; Victory, Oldham; and Electric at Bournemouth. Elwell Leaves B. T. P. London — C. F. Elwell, technical advisor for British Talking Pictures, has resigned. New Policy at Richmond Richmond — Three changes a week is the new policy adopted by the Byrd here, of which Robert H. Coulter is manager. Hudson Falls Without Theater Hudson Falls, N. Y. — This city is without a theater this summer, following closing of the Strand by J. A. Fitzgerald. New Firm at Wilson, N. C. Wilson, N. Churches Oppose Sunday Shows Macon, Mo. — Five Protestant churches conducted a referendum Aug. 26 on the question of Sunday motion picture shows. The Macon Ministerial Alliance has declared its opposition to Sunday amusements. Recently S. E. Pirtle who operates a motion picture house in Macon applied to the City Council for permission to operate his house on Sundays. The ministers don't want this competition. Opening as Film House Toledo — After being dark for several months, B. F. Keith's here will re-open tomorrow as a first-run talkie house under R-K-O management. Joseph Pearlstein, manager of the theatre during its many years as a vaudeville house, will continue in charge. The Vita-Temple here also opens tomorrow. Fresno House Opens Tomorrow Fresno, Cal. — Warner stars are to attend opening here tomorrow of the Warner Bros. Fresno, formerly the Pantages. L. A. House Opening Sept. 23 Los Angeles — Warners' Downtown theater, formerly the Pantages, opens here Sept. 23. License Fee Cut Defiance, O. — Picture house license fee here has been reduced from $100 to $25 a year.
