Film Market (Continued from Page 1) Day, Jr., Paramount's manager in Rio de Janeiro, said yesterday upon his arrival in New York on the Aquitania. Day came here by way of Europe. The South American market is being flooded with French, German and American pictures, Day said, and in addition, Argentinian production is booming, thereby causing further competition. Although most of the pictures made in the Argentine rarely play in the first-run de luxe houses, they are, nevertheless, popular because they are produced in the native tongues of all countries except Brazil, where the language is Portuguese. Day estimates that approximately 630 foreign pictures are imported yearly in South American countries. However, the film business in general is good, Day said, and Paramount this year is showing a substantial increase over last season. The South Americans, he added, are picture-conscious and they shop carefully for their entertainment. Day plans to visit Hollywood before returning to Rio.
