Charles Laughton on Tour of Four Southern Cities Charles Laughton leaves this afternoon on a Southern tour of personal appearances in conjunction with "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Current dates include the Fox, Atlanta, tomorrow; Malco, Memphis, Friday; RKO Orpheum, New Orleans, Saturday, and the Majestic, Houston, next Monday. At the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Laughton will be a guest at the Twelfth Night Revelers ball, the opening event of the social season. Critics from various cities will interview Laughton en route. Sociological Magazine to Devote Jan. Issue to Pix Forthcoming January issue of The Journal of Educational Sociology will be entirely devoted to the subject, "Some Educational Aspects of Motion Pictures," under the issueeditorship of Dr. Frederick M. Thrasher of New York University. Six articles by various authorities, including that written by Dr. Thrasher under the heading of "Education Versus Censorship," will make up the volume. Darmour to Make Three More Columbia Serials West Coast Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Hollywood — Larry Darmour has been signed by Columbia to make three more serials during the year, in addition to his Jack Holts for Columbia. Darmour has purchased the rights to the cartoon strip, "Terry and the Pirates," by Milton Caniff. Para.'s Release Schedule For 5 Months is Complete Paramount will release 22 pictures during the next five months, Neil Agnew, vice-president in charge of sales, announced over the week-end. Of the 22, Agnew said, all but two are completed, indicating an enviable position for the company in getting an early start on the 1940-41 program. Pictures to be released this month include "Emergency Squad," "Geronimo," "Santa Fe Marshal," and "Remember the Night." Release dates through May 31 have been definitely set, with Jack Benny's "Buck Benny Rides Again" winding up the five-month period of pictures. $300,000 De Luxe Theater Planned for Baton Rouge Baton Rouge, La. — Louisiana's state capital will have a new deluxer ready for next Labor Day as A. J. (Slim) Higgenbotham announced construction of a 2,200 seater here. The house, to be named the Hart, in honor of a relative, will cost, according to official announcements $300,000. It is to be constructed by Higgenbotham's Columbia Amusement Co., leased by Saenger Theaters Corp., and operated by Paramount-Richards. ROBERT T. KANE, British production chief for 20th-Fox, is in Hollywood. CLIFF REID, RKO Radio associate producer, arrived in New York on Friday from the Coast. DON AMECHE returned to Hollywood at the week-end from New York. WILLIAM LA VARRE, accompanied his wife and daughter, sailed from New YorV. on Friday for Venezuela. AL JOLSON is scheduled to leave New York next week-end for the Coast. P. E. FURBER, president of Trans-Lux Corp., sailed from New York last Friday for South America, accompanied by his wife. NANCY KELLY, who has been visiting New York, plans to leave late this week for Hollywood. THE THREE STOOCES, film comics, leave Hollywood shortly for a p. a. tour. BASIL BLECK, of UA Corp., is en route to Italy from New York aboard the Manhattan which sailed on •Thursday. FRANKIE DARRO arrives in Detroit Jan. 7 from the Coast to commence a p. a. swing of key houses in the Midwest. LEO ROBIN, songwriter, has returned to Hollywood following a business stay in the East. LEONARD GOLDENSON has returned to Paramount's h.o. from Detroit. ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL PAUL WILLIAMS is expected to arrive in New York this week from Washington. Will Induct Hersholt Jean Hersholt will be inducted as a "fall guy" at a luncheon of Dexter Fellows Tent, Circus Saints and Sinners Club of America, to be held in the grand ballroom of Hotel Astor on Jan. 10. More than 1,000 are to attend. Photographic-Projection Exports Continue to Drop Washington Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Washington — Exports of photographic and projection goods during November decreased by $335,000 compared to November, 1938, it was reported today by the Department of Commerce. The November figure for this year is reported at $1,332,000 while November, 1938 was given as $1,667,000. The eleven-month period ending in November also shows a drop from $18,338,000 for 1938 to $17,252,000 for 1939. This is a decrease of $1,086,000. New Brazilian Censorship Dept.
