The runner-up slot for the best '44 feature was shared by M-G-M's "Dragon Seed" and 20th-Fox's "Song of Bernadette." Fredric March and Greer Garson were named the best male and female star, respectively, the actor for his performance in "Adventures of Mark Twain" and the actress for her work in "Madame Curie." Barry Fitzgerald was selected as the best supporting player of the span. Walter T. Brown, WAC's assistant co-ordinator, acknowledging the certificate of merit presented by Andrew Valuchek, secretary of the Foreign Language Press Film Critics' Circle, said that the gift film project, under which 24,867 prints of feature length features went to our fighting men, has cost filmland more than $43,000,000. William Edlin, editor of the Jewish newspaper. The Day, presented the award to Paramount, and Arthur Israel, Jr., executive assistant to Barney Balaban, stated in his acceptance speech that "Going My Way" has proved one of the biggest money-making films in Paramount's history. Speaking for the American Foreign Language Press, Sigmund Gottlober, its director, declared that "American ideas, through the medium of the silver screen, have paved the way for a brotherhood of man the world over, a powerful promise which the statesmen of the world will see fulfilled." Newbold Morris, president of the Anti-Games Bills In Ohio Legislature Columbus, 0. — Bingo and similar games of chance would be prohibited under bills introduced in the Ohio Senate. Measure offered by Sen. Carl Sheppard, Akron, would make gambling a common felony, with a penalty of one to five years' imprisonment. Another bill introduced by Sen. Carl Shurtz, Newcomerstown, would prohibit games of chance entirely, with a fine of $50 to $500 and jail terms of 10 days to six months. IV. Y. TSniATERSI UA to Continue Exploit Plan of SYWA in S. A. Success in the exploitation of David 0. Selznick's "Since You Went Away" in Latin-American countries through a three-man team sent from New York will result in the continuance of the plan on other pictures of importance. Al Katz and Len Daly, who have returned from a four-month stay below the border, reported Friday that the injection of American promotional methods has caused records to be broken in a majority of the engagements. Katz, who stayed in Mexico City, said that the premiere of SYWA was a great event in the Republic, the picture receiving three awards. Press co-operation was excellent, he said, although the newspapers will not go for too much ballyhoo. The press book in Spanis^h, prepared by Daly, was an innovation in that it was comparable with the press books used here. Daly covered Buenos Aires, Panama, Chile and Peru where new house records were established.
