Wage provisions of the contract were re-opened as of July 1 although the contract expires July 1, 1946. Increases call for an eight per cent jump for employes with a year's service; increases to new minimums before guring length of service jumps; automatic progression from lower to higher graded jobs in four classifications and 11 new higher rate ranges. Agreement was negotiated by John J. O'Connor, vice-president, and James Murphy, ipersonnel director, for Universal, and Russell M. Moss, business agent of the union. Form Women's Group For "Night of Stars" More than 200 women are represented in the Women's Division for the 12th annual "Night of Stars" at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 13, Sylvan Gotshal, chairman of the entertainment, revealed. James Sauter Named to Met. Red Cross Council Francis Randolph, chairman of the Metropolitan Camp and Hospital Council of the American Red Cross, yesterday announced the election of James E. Sauter as a member of that Council. In that capacity Sauter, who is also Executive Director of the United Theatrical WAC, will act as volunteer chairman of the Theatrical Activities Committee of the Metropolitan Council. UA's Eastern District Meeting Here Friday Branch managers from United Artists' New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Buffalo, New Haven and Washington branches will attend an Eastern district meeting in New York on Friday. '44 Canadian Grosses At $53,173,325 Peak Ottawa — Canadian Government announced preliminary figures on theater operations in 1944, showing total paid admissions at 208,167,180 compared with 204,677,550 in previous year. Theater grosses aggregated a record $53,173,325, compared with $52,567,989 in 1943, not including amusement taxes. Stars Autograph Covers For NWF Stamp Auction Fifty-six star-autographed first daj' covers will be auctioned off for the National War Fund at the Stamp Collectors Club on Oct. 30. Small will return to the Coast after a stay of two weeks. Expect Griffith Trial To Run Into Next Week Onlahoma City — Cross-examina tion of B. J. McKenna, general man-' ager of Griffith Amusement Co., moved verj' slow in Federal court here yesterday, and defense attor neys admitted their chances of ending testimony this week are now slight. Robert T. Wright, special assistant to the Attorney General, spent several hours inquiring into Griffith competition practices. McKenna denied incriminating questions at every turn. Wall St. Speculates on Extra Paramount Dividend Financial circles are speculating as to an increased Paramount dividend, perhaps an extra, the Wall St. Journal reported yesterday. Pointing out that "this is very likely in the cards," the Journal said, "directors probably will give priority to the program of financial upbuilding." Paramount stock currently figures in the demand for long-term options on the put and call market. Para. 90-day puts, at the market, per 100 shares, are $200; calls, $237.50. Abelson Named Manager Of Classics L. A. Office Appointment of Robert P. Abelson as Los Angeles branch manager of Film Classics was announced yesterday by L. E.
