Detroit Service Help To Receive Pay Tilts
Detroit — Preliminary agreement has been reached with major nabes on wage scales for theater service employes, according to James W. Padfield, president-business agent of IATSE Local B-179. Increases in all classes are covered. Padfield said the deal had been okayed by Co-operative Theaters, representing about 100 houses, and was merely awaiting formal confirmation.
Ushers are boosted from a scale of 30-35 cents per hour to 45-55 cents. Cashiers from $25 to $28; candy girls and doormen get five cents an hour more than ushers. The top figure is reached after a year's employment.
Padfield pointed out that the new pay scale will be retroactive for members only to Oct. 18.
Negotiations ar.e now being entered with the major downtown houses. Padfield paid tribute to Earl J. Hudson and David Idzal, circuit heads, who, he said, agreed to reopen the contracts voluntarily, although the old contracts still had two years to run.
In these big houses, the union is asking a raise for ushers from a 40-55-cent scale to 55-75 cents; and for cashiers, a $5 to $10 increase.
Detroit Carriers Strike Averted by New Contract
Detroit — The threatened walkout of film truck drivers servicing Detroit metropolitan area houses Tuesday was averted by last-minute settlement. It is understood that new contracts were drawn up for one year between truck drivers' union and both Cinema Service and Exhibitors Service which handle city deliveries. New terms are said to give an increase of $7 per week from $69 for a 44-hour week to $76 for a 40-hour week as the basic schedule.
An emergency meeting of exhibitors was held Tuesday morning when New Year's deliveries were threatened, and exhibitors took point of view that they would handle own film deliveries if necessary to assure continued service. They prepared appeal for court injunction which would have restrained any interference with exhibitors handling own deliveries.

Mayer Calls Attention To Tokyo Fire Menace
Tokyo (By Cable) — Following a preview screening of "The Southerner" for members of Japanese legislative bodies, Charles Mayer, manager for MPEA in Japan, called attention to the chronic overcrowding of theaters in this city. He pointed out the existing menace in the event of fire.
Of the 280 theaters in this city, only 80 escaped damage during air raids. About 60 new houses have been built but they are of flimsy construction.
