Film companies defense pleadings are due Sept. 15. Wanger to Have 8 Ready For Release in 18 Months Cohen Buys Partnership In SG N. O. Franchise New Orleans — Harold F. Cohen has purchased a partnership interest in the the Screen Guild franchise for this area, it is learned. Former Monogram district manager, Cohen joins Ernest Landaiche, who recently bought out Joy Houck's interest in the SG franchise here and in Memphis. Jerry Jernigan continues as Landaiche's partner in Memphis, operating under the latter's supervision from this city. Cox formerly was story man in the Walt Disney commercial division Twentieth-Fox will use two-color newspaper advertising in local assists for "The Luck of the Irish," Charles Schlaifer, ad-publicity director, announced at the week-end. Consisting of 800 and 1,000 line ads, which use green as the second color, campaign is designed to tee ofi^ Sept. 1 when picture opens in nine key cities. FCC Announces Tele Confab Washington Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Washington — The FCC announced on Friday that a conference with representatives of the television industry will be held here September 13 to "discuss substantial questions which may be presented by the record concerning the adequacy of existing rules and standards to achieve the soundest allocation plan." The Commission added that engineering details relating to these questions will not be taken up at this meeting. West Coast Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Hollywood — Walter Wanger will have eight pictures in release or ready for release within 18 months, it is announced They are "Tap Roots," released by Universal-International: ".loan of Arc," to be released by RKO ; "Tulsa," the first of Wanger's three picture deal with Eagle Lion: "Reisrn of Terror" and "The Blank Wall" which are also being released by Eagle Lion. Wanger will have three other productions shooting early in 1949, including "The Ballad and the Source," an untitled picture to star Greta Garbo, and a new Susan Hayward starring vehicle. cominG flno come Chicago Tribune Video Station Tied to DuMont Chicago— WGN-TV, the_ Chicago Tribune's television station, has signed an agreement with the DuMont Television network to exclusively outlet network originated programs in this city, it was announced at the week-end. Under terms of the contract,, sisfned by Frank P. Schreiber, WGNTV manager, and Humboldt J. Greig, DuMont sales chief, station will begin network operations in early September. Until direct connections are established between East and West stations, programs will be made available to WGN by teletranscriptions. This is the first town to shut down, although polig is on th^ increase in West Coast Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Hollywood — Paul Henreid announced that the first picture under his two-picture deal with Canadian International Screen Productions will be the screen version of "Jack Hammer Song" play by Millard Lampell. Lampell is now working on the screenplay of the film to be produced in Toronto, in the Spring with Henreid as the star and also co-producer with Joseph Than. Henreid denied a report made recently that Allied Artists will release film. A deal is now being made and an announcement will be made within the next week. To Release Trimmed "Electro" An edited version of "Mourning Becomes Electra," with running time ti'immed to a little under two hours, will be released shortly, Robert Mochrie, RKO vice-president in charge of domestic distribution, announced Friday.
