Siegel West Coast Bureau cf THE FILM DAILY Hollywood — Funeral services were held yesterday for Morris J. Siegel, former Republic Pictures president, with Rabbi Max Nussbaum officiating. Siegel was a past president of Temple Israel and honorary pallbearers included former Temple presidents Leon "Schlessinger, Samuel J. and Irving Briskin. and current president I. E. Chadwick. Active pallbearers were Hy J. Glick, Harry and Louis Grey, Robert North, Rudolph Abel, John Store, Dr. Al Goodman, David Bluest.one. Among those attending the services were E. J. Mannix, Harry Goetz, James R. Grainger, John Wayne, and Harry Sherman. Siegel died of a cerebral hemorrhage on Saturday while aboard a train passing through Arizona. He was a founder of Republic Pictures, serving that company as vice-president and president. Later he was a M-G-M production executive, and recentJy an independent producer. Survivors include his wife, two daughters, and three brothers, Sol C., 20th-Fox production executive, Sam and Al. John Donovan Dead John J. Donovan, 50, whose long illness forced him to retire after 3 years as managing director of Lloyds Film Storage Corp., died late Monday at Neurological Institute, Manhattan. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Tane Donovan, two sons and three daughters. He will lay in state at the Charles J. O'Shea funeral parlors in Astoria with a High Requiem Mass to be conducted at the Immaculate Conception Church, Queens Thursday morning. Interment will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. I NBC Offers Six TV Film Programs to Affiliates NBC is now offering film recordings of six of its major television programs to affiliated stations not connected either via coaxial cable or microwave relay, Carleton D. Smith, director of tele operations, announced yesterday. Films are made from the picture tube during live broadcasts. Sextet of programs now being offefed includes "Musical Miniatures," "Story of the Week," "Stop Me If You've Heard This One," "America Song," "Howdy Doody" and "Television Screen Magazine." $60,000,000 for Film Advertising in Year Motion picture advertising expenditures of motion picture producers, difitributors and exhibitors, in 1947 are estimated by the 1948 Film Daily Year Book at $60,000,000. Of this amount, $42,000,000 was spent In newspaper ad space, $12,000,000 on rad'o advertising, $5,300,000 in magazines, $600,000 on accessories and direct mail, and $100,000 on outdoor advertising. It is estimated that 157,003 motion picture ads are placed dally in various U. S. media. Theater Candy Sales Off, Popcorn Up in Northwest Minneapolis — Theateirs in the Minneapolis film territory are reporting candy sales off slightly this summer due principally to the increase in availability of major brands at other outlets — drug and grocery stores, etc. — for the first time since the war. However, theaters here reported popcorn sales as holding their own with some increase in consumption reported, exactly the reverse of the candy situation.
