Is Zukor In?
The Franco-American $100,000,000
Company? — Comment Heard
at the Dinner
G. J. Fleischman of the Fleischman Construction Co. is one of the directors of the $100,000,000 FrancoAmerican Cinematograph Co. He is also one of the largest contractors, especially of theaters, in this country, and has done considerable work for Famous Players.
When it became known in film circles that he was identified with the new company reports circulated that because of his closeness to Adolph Zukor that in some way Mr. Zukor might be interested in this new big foreign concern.
When Mr. Fleischman was askec about these reports he said that a this time he did not care to maki any comment.
The dinner at the Ritz was sig nificant, as one of the guests put it in that it showed how the moving picture had developed "when thf Minister Plenipotentiary of Francs honors such an event with his pres ence."
Arthur Brisbane, who once upon r time said some harsh things abou pictures, took the opportunity o gracefully backing water on thi' point during his address, which, bj the way, was the most interesting o the addresses delivered. He said, that when pictures first were coming in he did not like them "just like a lot of other people." Then he wen on to explain why, and adcled tha just as it was difficult for some of the ancients to believe that the firs hieroglyphics could be improved up on so he had felt that the printed word could be by pictures, but tha since then he had learned how th pictures were an improvement.
Some of the figures mentioned b> M. Himmel regarding the various or ganizations identified with the new company called for much commen from picture folk. His figures as tc the number of houses "controlled' by the company in France and othei European countries were, by some considered very high, while some of the companies aligned with the new, venture were not regarded as ex
emely important.
