DAILV Tuesday, February 10, 1931 Two Features Being Made At Larry Darmour Studio With a schedule that will keep the Larry Darmour studio busy for many months, production will start off with "Second Hand Kisse?," featuring Louise Fazenda, going into work immediately. Following this will be "Mickey's Crusaders," a Mickey McGuire comedy under direction of Albert Herman. February will sec two features made. The first, a Spanish production is to be dwected by Joseph Levering with a cast of Latin-American players. The other feature will be "Defenders of the Law." Ralph Graves in "Salvation Nell" Ralph Graves is the latest addition to the cast being as>embled by James Cruze for "Salvation Nell," Tiffany release. Van Dyke to Direct Kyne Story "Never the Twain Shall Meet," Peter B. Kyne novel, will be directed for M-G-M by W. S. VanDyke, with Conchita Montenegro and Leslie Howard in the leading roles. This will be the first English speaking role for Miss Montenegro. Leslie Howard will play the male lead. A large supporting cast has been signed for the picture, including C. Aubrey Smith, Mitchell Lewis, Karen Morley, Clyde Cook, Bob Gilbert and Lloyd Ingraham. Second Thrill-O-Drama In Work 'Air Police," second of the Sono Art-World Wide Thrill-O-Drama series, has gone into production. It is a screen adaptation of an original story by Arthur Hoerl. Bennet Cohen wrote the dialogue. It is being directed by Stuart Paton, former Universal director, who has just returned from England, where he was active in British production. The cast consists of Kenneth Harlan, Josephine Dunn, Charles Delaney, Richard Cramer, George Cheeseborough, and Tom London. Warners Buy "Five Star Final" Warner Bros, have bought the screen rights to "Five Star Final," the Broadway play by Louis Weitzenkorn. The picture will be produced as a starring vehicle lor Edward G. Robinson. Dillon to Direct Dorothy Mackaill John Francis Dillon will direct Dorothy Mackaill in her next First National picture, "The Reckless Hour." Changed Again "Indiscreet," instead of "Indiscretion," is now the title of the new Gloria Swanson film being made at the United Artists Studio under direction of Leo McCarey. Batch of New Contracts Awarded by Paramount Fifteen important player, director and writer contracts have been awarded by Paramount, it is announced by B. P. Schulberg. Eight agreements for exclusive services of 11 stars or featured players include Four Marx Brothers, Paul Lukas, Juliette Compton, Norman Foster, Eugene Pallette, Jackie Coogan and his brother, Robert Coogan, and Carman Barnes, the school girl novelist and playwright who has just been picked by Jesse L. Lasky as the company's next star. Two directors who will remain with new contracts are Lothar Mendes and Frank Tuttlc. The writers are Percy Heath, Oliver H. P. Garrett, Herman Mankiewicz, Erna Mankiewicz, Betty White, and Zoe Akins. Collier, Jr., in Romantic Lead A last-minute switch at the First National studio has given William Collier, Jr., the romantic lead in "Broadminded," in which Joe E. Brown is being starred. Ona Munson has the feminine lead. Others playing featured roles under the direction of Mervyn Le Roy are Marjoric White, Holmes Herbert, Bela Lugosi, Thelma Todd and Margaret Livingston. Liberty Mag. Story for Barthelmess The first picture in which Richard Barthelmess will be seen under his new starring contract with First National is "Spent Bullets," based on John Monk Saunders' story, "Nikki and Her War Birds,"' which ran in Liberty Magazine. 'U' Buys Hurlbut Story "Lillies of Broadway," by William J. Hurlbut, author of many stage plays, has been bought by Universal and will be produced early next season as a special. It may also be done on the stage later. Second M-G-M Sport Subject Second of a series of sport subjects being made at the M-G-M studios is "Splash," which demonstrates swimming strokes and diving positions. Buster Keaton, Anita Page and Catherine Moylan will be the pupils in the film under the instruction of Free' Cady. Zion Myers and Jules White will direct. Canine Comedy on "Horn" Zion Myers and Jules White, directors of the M-G-M dog comedies, will direct a burlesque of "Trader Horn," to be called "Trader Airedale." Warr.ers Sign Cantor's Partner Teddie Walters, comedienne who appeared with Eddie Cantor in vaudeville, has been signed by Warner Bros. She will first take a co'irr.e in the Warner-First National training academy. Reel Costs Doubled Newsreel production costs have doubled since advent of sound, Emanuel Cohen of Paramount estimated yesterday. An indication of the difficulties in recording is found in the fact that portable equipment being used approximates 1,000 pounds in weight.
