Radio followed suit. As the public grew to expect the finest talent in radio entertainment, it was necessary to attract advertisers to carry the added cost. Coffman calls attention to the fact that advertising has been responsible for elevating the standards of living in America and, in view of this, cannot possibly be considered an evil. He believes that sponsored films will continue in favor, but that greater skill will be used in introducing the advertising angle so that there cannot possibly be any objection, once the public is educated to expect them. Australian Travelogue for U. S. D. Dow of the Australian Commissioner General's office has arranged with Talking Picture Epics for the United States release of the two-reel Australian travel lecture film, "This is Australia." Miami House Goes Second Run Miami, Fla. — The Fairfax has changed its policy and instead of being a de luxe first run house will now feature second-run and return oictures. Prices have been reduced from 75 cents to 25 and 35 cents. All big pictures will now be shown at the Olympia, where the scale is 60 cents.. "Vice Squad" Opening June 5 Paramount's "Vice Squad," rushed to completion as the first screen picturization of the nationwide expose of vice squads, framing of innocent women and use of police-paid stoo! pigeons, will have its world premiere at the New York and Brooklyn Paramount theaters on June 5. Wm. Wolfson Joins RKO Dallas — William Wolfson, formerly connected with Publix as advertising manager of the Palace here, has taken over the job vacated by Frank Orlando Starz as advertising manager of the RKO Majestic. New Grief Looms Over Sponsored Films (Continued from Page 1) showing of sponsored pictures in schools, department stores, hotels and other non-theatrical halls. Number of industrial and advertising films being used by schools and colleges for educational purposes has taken quite a spurt lately, according to the distribution department of Visugraphic Pictures, which produces such pictures for various firms. Some universities are using commercial shorts as a definite part of the curriculum. Where the theater man's feat comes in mostly is because of the entertainment, rather than advertising or instructional, values being injected into ad pictures. On this basis, it is believed the sponsored performances could build up a considerable audience. Houses getting a big matinee play from women shoppers would lose most of this trade to the department store shows. F. A. Flader to New York Washington Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Washington — With closing of the Rialto for the summer, F. A. Flader, in charge of Universal activities in the Capital area, will go to the New York office, while Rodney Collier, managing director of the theater will remain in Washington as Universal's local representative. The house manager, Rhinehold Wallach, plans to sail June 4 for Munich to visit his parents. Costly Side Show Washington Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Washington — Fox theater patrons are being treated to an "added attraction" for two weeks representing a cost of thousands of dollars. It is a gorgeously beautiful flower show installed by florists, under auspices of the George Washington Bicentennial Garden Committee, to arouse interest in the coming Bicentennial Garden contest. The display fills all available space in the interior lobbies on the first and mezzanine floors. Carl Mortenson Transferred Hartford, Conn. — Carl Mortenson, assistant manager of the Palace for the past two years, has been named to the same post at the Fox-Capitol in Port Chester, N. Y. The Palace has closed for the summer. Charles F. Benson is manager. Singer's Midgets in Warner Houses Singer's Midgets have been booked by the Warner Bros. Artists' Bureau for a tour of the Warner houses in Pennsylvania, opening June 13 in Pittsburgh. "$50,000 on Remodeling Kansas City — Approximately $50,000 is being spent by Hughes-Franklin Theaters in remodeling the Tivoli and Lindbergh here and the Granada, Independence.
