Trends
— in the Industry
(Contn: i'a.ie 1 )
popularity can be traced to their tempo. We are in the whirling center nt' a fast-moving age. Fast-moving pictures are the vogue of the day. * * *
The da) of the Small House K'^'it cinema palI'ttminq Hack ace seems to be onthe-out. Designed originally for the days wln-n pictures were tar less loquacious, they seem to have lost much of their glamor with the coming of sound. The trend in new theaters seems to center around the two to three thousand range. 'The little theater movement, too. is picking up with the advent of a rising market for the better foreign productions. Being 'talked of, also, i> a string of specially constructed houses, in major cities, to cater to the ten per cent minority or intelligentsia, as it were. These theaters to present a continual How of product, cut and tailored particularly for those who insist on thinking and who demand and are willing to pay for the high-hat in cinema entertainment. The possibilities here are interesting. At any rate, it looks like we have seen the end of the 6,000-seat house and that the Roxy may be the last of the socalled super-theaters.

'HOLD OFF' POLICY STIRS INTENSIVE SELLING DRIVES
In an effort t.i offset deferred buying campaigns on the part of exhltuorganizations, major distributors are instructing their held torces to institute intensive selling campaigns.
Discussing the new season situation yesterdaj a sales executive said: "Exhibitors who buy their 1931-32 product now, at the opening of the season, have many advantages to be gained. Buying of pictures before they are screened, in numerous instances, enables a theater to get them ic at a reasonable figure because if they turn out exceptionally good, the rental is bound to jump. Furthermore, an exhibitor who buys now is protected against purchases made by big competitor circuits. At the present time a theater may have the pick of the product."
