This leading industry publication, published out of New York, was founded in 1915 by Wid Gunning (who called his publication Wid's Daily until 1922). The Film Daily documented the rise of the Hollywood studios, the transition to sound, and the evolution of the American film industry (the paper finally shuttered in 1970). The Film Daily included feature reviews, news stories, and advertisements, but its extensive coverage of short films in the 1920s and 30s distinguished it from other trade papers of the period. -- Eric Hoyt, 2011/2013

ifiMj DA1L.Y St. Louis Resumes Theatres Open Again — Changes in Exchange Offices ST. LOUIS. — The influenza epidemic has been practically checked here and theatres were reopened Wednesday. Pathe, Inc., also the Standard Film Corp., spent the influenza period in moving into their new headquarters in the Plaza hotel building. The announcement that the Kleine Co. will handle its productions through the General, will leave a vacancy in the Plaza hotel building, which, it is understood, will be occupied by Metro. Sidney Baker, formerly in charge of the Kansas City Board of Censorship, will take charge of the distribution of the Grand Central film exchange in St. T.miis for this territory, handling all the productions owned by Mr. Sievers, of the First National Exhibitors. It is understood that F. M. Brockwell, branch manager, will leave within the next few weeks for Seattle, to take charge of the Goldwyn branch in that city. His successor has not been announced. Following the resignation of Paul Bush, who leaves Goldwyn to go with Universal in Detroit. W. A. Kaiser has been holding down the detail end here for Goldwyn. The Fox New Liberty theatre will re-open with William Farnum in "Riders of the Purple Sage," to be followed by Theda Bara in "Salome." The Liberty has also contracted for the Educational releases of Happy Hooligan and Katzenjammer Kids cartoons. Chas. J. Vollmer, formerly manager of the Columbia theatre, has lined up with the Fox theatre here and will be assistant to Manager Sidney. Sunday, November 10, 1918 Notes From Dayton DAYTON.— George W. Nairn, formerly assistant manager of the Apollo theatre here, is now assistant manager of The Strand, operated by the Lisbon interests. The Strand theatre did not open until six o'clock Saturday, November 2, as a mark of respect to A. Paul Keith, whose burial took place that day. Bert Fiala, manager and owner of the Alhambra theatre, a suburban house, has been sick for the last four days — neuralgia, not the "flu." Gilbert Chandler of Chillicothe, son of Martin G. Chandler, was in Dayton most of last week for a visit. Mr. Chandler spent much of his time at The Dayton theatre with Paul Gray.
