Sidney Franklin will direct. * * * Jack Oakie and Richard Arlen will be co-featured again by Paramount in "College Humor." Frances Dee has the feminine lead. Cast also includes Bing Crosby and the radio comedy team of George Burns and Grace Allen. Wesley Ruggles will direct. * « * Ernest Wood and Sam Godfrey are appearing in Columbia's "Parole Girl," now in production under the direction of Eddie Cline. * * * With the signing of Dorothy Burgess, Hugh Herbert and Louis Calhern for featured roles in "Strictly Personal," Charles R. Rogers has completed one of the finest casts he has yet assembled for any of his Paramount features. Dorothy Jordan, Eddie Quillan, Marjorie Rambeau, Edward Ellis, Olive Tell and Helen Jerome Eddy also have roles in this picture which Associate Producer Harry Joe Brown has just put into production under the direction of Ralph Murphy. * * ♦ Minna Gombell will appear in "Pleasure Cruise," Fox's production which will go before the cameras as soon as its director, Frank Tuttle, has recovered from a sudden attack of influenza. Harold Hecht, Broadway dance director, has been signed by Paramount to aid in the preparation of musical numbers for three films. * » * Roland Young and his cousin, Major Henry Allen, are writing a play about Hollywood. * * » Jerry Sackheim is "doubling in brass." He is keeping busy as RKO's assistant story editor and is also writing the screen play and dialogue for "Maiden Voyage," a screen musical comedy based on a story by Mark Sandrich and Ben Holmes. Sandrich will direct, with Louis Brock as the producer. Val Old Friend What's become of the gag about the film fan who approached the boxoffice of a double-feature policy house at 6 P. M. and asked if he was in time for the last show? Roy Del Ruth, Warner director, has uncovered it. He recently noted a movie addict going up to the bo. of a triple-feature theater at 5 P. M. and asking if he could still see all of the final performance. Burton and Will Jason will write the tunes for this RKO picture. * • * Competing with 20 adults, Everett, 11-year old son of Larry Urbach won the ringer tournament at the Brae Mar course. His prize was a bronze trophy. * * * "Flaming Signal" and "The Shadow Laughs," sixth and seventh releases for Invincible, were shipped to New York last week. "City Hall," to be produced by William Pizor for Invincible, will start work next week. * * * Frances, brunette daughter of Harvey Thew, well known scenarist, has completed an engagement in "Picture Snatcher" at Warner Bros. She also worked in "One Way Passage," "Big City Blues" and "The Crooner." * * * Philip Merivale will make his film debut for Fox in "I Loved You Wednesday," the Broadway success by William Du Bois and Molly Ricardel. * * * Lovers of statistics will be interested in knowing that 26,004 extras worked at RKO during 1932, receiving a total of $219,818 for their services. * * * Alison Skipworth has signed a new contract with Paramount * * * Betty Furness, RKO Radio starlet and New York debutante, has been assigned to play an important ingenue role in "The Great Jasper," starring Richard Dix. Others in the cast include Wera Engels, Edna May Oliver, Florence Eldridge, Gretchen Wilson, Bruce Cabot, Robert McWade. J. Walter Ruben is directing with Kenneth Macgowan as associate producer. * * * Margaret Lindsay, the ingenue of "Cavalcade," has been signed by Warners for a prominent supporting role in William Powell's next starring picture, "Private Detective." Michael Curtiz will be the director. * * * Jane Murfin is writing the screen play for "Declassee," which will serve as a starring vehicle for Ann Harding. Miss Murfin wrote the last three Constance Bennett successes. » * * Constance Bennett, now finishing work in "Our Betters" at the RKO Studios, will next make an original story by Wanda Tuchock called "A Bed of Roses." Joel McCrea is the first member of the new Bennett cast selected.
