MASS SYSTEM LOSS PUT AT 30 MILLION (Continued from Page 1) in his final editing. It's a case of living night and day with your picture until it is ready for public showing. "Hollywood would produce better pictures if its producers, the men who actually make the films, had a financial interest in their undertaking. That is one vital reason for the success of United Artists, where there is no mass production. "David Belasco would not have been the great producer he was if he had tried to stage 20 plays a year, or 50; Ziegf eld's 'Follies' would have been mere routine girl shows if he had put on even three annually. You can imagine Schubert composing 50 symphonies every 365 days. No motion picture maker can devote his full working day to more than six features." Small pointed out that several have used this system with marked success, among them Samuel Goldwyn, Darryl Zanuck, David Selznick, Walter Wanger, Cecil DeMille and D. W. Griffith. Small recently finished "Red Salute," starring Barbara Stanwyck, with Robert Young and is starting production of "The Melody Lingers On," with Josephine Hutchinson and George Houston. On completion of the latter, "Last of the Mohicans" will be placed in work.
